49ers' Nedney Fined $7,500 For Obscene Gesture

Sep 5, 2014 5:41 AM

49ers' kicker Joe Nedney was fined $7,500 by the NFL on Wednesday for making an obscene gesture at his home fans during last week's game against New Orleans. Nedney blamed frustration for his sly gesticulation in the third quarter of the 49ers' loss to the Saints at Candlestick Park, their fifth consecutive defeat.

Dolphins Granted Gado Off Waivers

Jul 10, 2014 1:52 AM

The Miami Dolphins have been awarded running back Samkon Gado off waivers from the Houston Texans. Gado appeared in just three games this season with Houston, rushing for 46 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. He also caught eight passes for 59 yards. Miami entered a claim for Gado last week after it was learned that Ronnie Brown would be sidelined for the season because of a torn ACL. The team received an exemption from the NFL to finish the transaction because of its trip to London last week. The Dolphins released defensive tackle Sam Rayburn to open a roster spot. Rayburn was signed on October 10 and was inactive for each the team's last three games.

Jets' Coles May Sit With Concussion

Oct 20, 2014 9:19 PM

Jets' wide receiver Laveranues Coles has a concussion and it was uncertain Wednesday if he'll play in New York's game against Washington this weekend. Coach Eric Mangini addressed Coles' injury during a conference call with Redskins beat writers. Mangini didn't mention Coles in his earlier news conference with Jets' writers. "Any time you have an injury it is scary," Mangini said. "With a guy like Laveranues who is so tough, you have to be careful and make sure you go through the same process that you would go through with every other player. That is what we are doing." The Jets' wide receiver didn't practice Wednesday and wouldn't address the injury because it's against team policy. Mangini was unsure if Coles will be ready to play Sunday against the Redskins.

Schaub Better, But Unlikely To Start For Texans

Jun 10, 2014 3:41 AM

Matt Schaub was still feeling the effects Wednesday of a concussion from a helmet-to-helmet hit against San Diego, and coach Gary Kubiak said he probably wouldn't play Sunday against Oakland. "It's feeling better, clearing up a little bit," he said. "Headaches are subsiding, so we'll take it day to day." With Schaub likely out, Sage Rosenfels should get the third start of his career and his first since a 22-0 loss to Cleveland in 2005 when he was with Miami.

Carr Likely To Start Sunday For Panthers

Aug 1, 2014 9:18 AM

Panthers' quarterback Vinny Testaverde missed practice Wednesday, leaving David Carr the front-runner to start Sunday at Tennessee. The 43-year-old Testaverde aggravated a right Achilles tendon injury in the first half of Carolina's loss to Indianapolis. He sat out the second half and has been receiving extensive treatment the past three days. Testaverde was seen riding to and from the practice field Wednesday in a golf cart. Carr, who missed the Panthers' win over Arizona, replaced Testaverde despite still recovering from compression fractures in his lower back. Saying he was only at 80 percent, Carr threw for 103 yards, but the Panthers were outscored 21-0 in the second half of the 31-7 loss. "He was well enough to play last week. There aren't a lot of players out there that are 100 percent at this stage of the season," coach John Fox said. "He looked sharp in practice today. He had a good day of preparation both in the classroom and out on the field."

Jags' DT Stroud Facing Four-Game Suspension

Sep 13, 2014 9:24 PM

Jaguars' defensive tackle Marcus Stroud is facing a four-game suspension, which could start as early as this weekend, for a violation of the NFL steroids and related substances policy. News of Stroud's pending suspension was reported by the Florida Times-Union on Wednesday morning and confirmed by league and team sources and sources close to Stroud. A three-time Pro Bowl performer, Stroud registered a positive test within the past two weeks, a source said, and he's exercised his right to have the so-called "B-sample" of his urine tested. If that test is also positive, Stroud would be suspended.

Colts Raffling Off Five Super Bowl Rings For Charity

Oct 31, 2014 5:14 AM

During a pep rally for Sunday's game against New England, Colts' owner Jim Irsay wore a giant blue top hat, large round blue sunglasses and a white showman's suit as he told hundreds of fans about the "Quest for the Ring" raffle. "I look like Willie Wonka Elton, a combination of Willie Wonka and Elton John," Irsay joked before throwing open a gold treasure chest containing a small box with five shiny rings. Although some fans clearly hoped Irsay would toss the rings into the crowd, he explained the rings would be given away in a raffle he hopes will raise up to $1 million for Indiana charities. Raffle tickets cost $5 each and will be sold through Nov. 20 for the three-stage contest. Twenty-five finalists will first be chosen from up to 200,000 tickets the team hopes to sell. Ten finalists will then be chosen to move onto the contest's final stage during a Nov. 30-Dec. 1 treasure hunt for Colts'-related items hidden around Indianapolis.
