For the second year in a row and the fifth time in the past seven years, a transfer quarterback has won the Heisman Trophy.
LSU's Jayden Daniels, who began his college career at Arizona State before transferring to Baton Rouge in 2022, won the sport's most prestigious individual award Saturday night after accounting for 4,946 yards of offense (3,812 passing yards, 1,134 rushing yards) and 50 total touchdowns this season.
The officiating crew that did not call a blatant and potentially game-deciding pass interference penalty during Sunday night's game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers game missed a similar call one week earlier in Atlanta on a play that harkened back to one of the most controversial non-calls in NFL history.
The Bengals did not violate the NFL's injury policy before quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a season-ending injury in Week 11, league sources confirmed to ESPN on Saturday.
The NFL was investigating why Burrow was not listed on the injury report leading up to the Nov. 16 game against the Baltimore Ravens. A social media post by the team the day before the game had shown Burrow wearing a compression sleeve on his right hand coming off the team plane in Baltimore. The post was later deleted.
New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has cleared concussion protocol and will be listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers, the team announced on Friday night.
Saints quarterback Taysom Hill (foot/left hand) and wide receiver Rashid Shaheed (thigh) are also questionable after missing the week of practice, while wide receiver Chris Olave is questionable after missing two practices with the flu.
"I have felt better, but I'm doing great, that's for sure," Carr said in a pool report distributed to the media by the team on Friday.
Buffalo Bills players and general manager Brandon Beane offered their support for coach Sean McDermott on Friday, one day after the coach held a team meeting to address remarks referencing 9/11 that he made in training camp in 2019 becoming public.
"Obviously when you're in leadership positions, you've got a lot of people looking up to you, and none of us are perfect, OK," said Beane, who is in his seventh season in Buffalo with McDermott after also working together for the Carolina Panthers.
After missing seven games due to a hamstring injury, Justin Jefferson has revised his goal for the 2023 season.
Originally hoping to break the NFL record for receiving yards in a season and eclipsing the 2,000-yard mark, the Minnesota Vikings receiver has reset his sights.
"Since I got hurt the new goal is 1,000 yards," Jefferson said. "I want to end every single year over 1,000 yards."
Jefferson has 571 receiving yards with five games left on Minnesota's schedule.
Carolina Panthers tight end Hayden Hurst does not believe the post-traumatic amnesia he was diagnosed with by an independent neurologist after suffering a concussion will be career-ending.
"I'm doing better each day," Hurst said. "It's not going to end my career, just being cautious as I come back. Should be another week or two."
Hurst suffered a concussion on Nov. 9 during a game against the Chicago Bears.
"I appreciate everyone reaching out & checking on me. I suffered a pretty nasty concussion against the Bears a few weeks ago & don't remember up to 4 hours after the game. Scary situation but the Panthers have been incredible walking me through this process," Hurst wrote on X.
Sean McDermott said Thursday that he regretted mentioning 9/11 in a 2019 training camp talk with the Buffalo Bills and "immediately apologized" to his players.
McDermott emphasized he made the comments "to discuss the importance of communication and being on the same page with the team."
The coach said he "regretted mentioning 9/11 in my message that day and I immediately apologized to the team. Not only was 9/11 a horrific event in our country's history, but a day that I lost a good family friend."
As first reported by Go Long, McDermott told players in a speech to come together and used the terrorists on 9/11 as an example, asking players questions about how the attacks were executed and referencing the hijackers getting on the same page.
Asked why he mentioned 9/11 and whether hijackers were specifically referenced as an example of a group coming together, McDermott said, "It was mentioning 9/11 in the context of the team meeting. The goal of the team meeting was the importance of communication and being on the same page as a team."
Jim Harbaugh and Michigan are negotiating a contract extension worth almost $11 million per year over five years.
The deal is not yet imminent and there have been some reports Michigan is seeking a provision preventing Harbaugh from entertaining an NFL job during this coaching cycle. Harbaugh has been an NFL coaching candidate at multiple points over the past few years.
Michigan won the Big Ten this season and is in the College Football Playoff.
Harbaugh was hired by Michigan in 2015 after a four-year stint with the San Francisco 49ers.
