Rob Gronkowski Patient Not Receiving Red Zone Targets

Oct 18, 2018 12:55 PM

Rob Gronkowski has only received one target inside the opponent's 20-yard line.

“First off, I’ve got to get open,” Gronkowski said. “I’ve got to get out there and run better routes and then I’ll start seeing more targets. . . . Whatever I have to do to help out the team, even if the ball’s not going my way, I’ve just got to do it and just keep grinding.”

In 2017, including the playoffs, Gronkowski was targeted 11 times inside the 10-yard line, resulting in six touchdowns. He drew 11 more targets between the 11 and 20-yard line, catching six of them.

“Whatever play is called, we’re scoring points,” Gronkowski said. “We’re scoring down there.”

NFL Unlikely To Reach Formal National Anthem Policy This Season

Oct 17, 2018 3:02 PM

The NFL is unlikely to institute a formal national anthem policy this season.

“The focus of the players’ association, the NFL and all of our clubs and our players is to focus on the efforts our players have continually brought (forth) as their issues in their communities and how can we make our communities better,” Roger Goodell said after the fall meetings concluded.

“They’re incredibly passionate about that. They have brought these issues greater awareness and they are working in their communities to try to make their communities better and they are working on the issues, on criminal justice reform. I’ve been on listen-and-learn tours with our players. Owners have been on listen-and-learn tours. Our players are obviously out there and you see a tremendous amount of work being done.”

In May, the NFL passed a rule that forbids players from sitting or taking a knee if they are on the field or sidelines during “The Star-Spangled Banner,” but allowed them to stay in the locker room if they wish.

The NFL left it to teams on how to punish players and the union challenged the rule in a grievance. The NFL subsequently halted the policy.

NFL Concerned About Chargers' Financial Viability In Los Angeles

Oct 17, 2018 12:55 PM

The NFL is concerned about the viability of the Los Angeles Chargers in the market of Los Angeles.

The franchise is expected to revise its Inglewood revenue goals from $400 million to around $150 million.

The Los Angeles market appeared to strongly prefer the Rams and Raiders over the Chargers before their respective relocations.

The Chargers left San Diego after they were unable to get a new stadium built.

NFL Eliminates Rule Forbidding Cross-Ownership

Oct 17, 2018 10:29 AM

The NFL has eliminated a rule that prevents owners from owning non-NFL teams in markets containing other NFL teams.

The rule resulted in Stan Kroenke transferring ownership of the Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets to members of his family.

The rule results from the shrinking pool of individuals with the money to buy NFL teams.

At one point, league rules prohibited owners from owning any other major-league sports franchise. The league allowed cross-ownership in the same market when the late Wayne Huizenga, who already owned MLB’s Marlins and the NHL’s Panthers, bought the Dolphins in 1994.

Jon Gruden: Raiders Aren't Tanking Anything

Oct 17, 2018 10:05 AM

Jon Gruden refuted the notion that the Oakland Raiders are tanking.

"I'll say this: We aren't tanking anything," Gruden said. "I hear the hatred out there, some of the rumors that we are tanking it to get a first-round pick or a higher pick. We are not getting up at 4 o'clock in the morning to tank it. Ain't nobody tanking it.

"I don't know who wrote that or who said that or who thinks that, but that isn't the case here. We are going to continue to work hard, continue to build our team, and that was part of the message."

The Raiders traded away Khalil Mack on the eve of the season following his holdout.

Oakland has lost their past two games by a combined 53-13 to the Chargers and Seahawks.

NFL Had 'Intervention' With Seven Teams On Concussion Rates

Oct 16, 2018 8:38 PM

The NFL identified seven teams in 2017 that had a higher incidence of preseason concussions than the others and "did a targeted intervention with those clubs."

"In six of those seven clubs, the numbers did go down," Dr. Allen Sills said. "Those seven clubs had 23 practice concussions as a whole in 2017, down to nine in 2018."

Overall, the league said, preseason concussions were down from 91 in 2017 to 79 this year, and there were zero on kickoff plays.

Jerry Jones Denies Report Of Extension For Jason Garrett

Oct 16, 2018 5:11 PM

Jerry Jones has denied a report that the Dallas Cowboys have agreed to an extension with Jason Garrett.

Garrett signed a five-year, $30 million extension in January 2015.

“I don’t know where Jeff is getting his information,” Jones said on his weekly radio show on 105.3 The Fan, via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. “He’s pulling one out of the air there as far as any knowledge. My response should not in any way indicate that I’m thinking about it or whether it’s going to be there, it’s just not something that I would have visited with anybody about, least of all Jeff.

“I happen to know that I’ve never spoken to another soul about that as far as that is concerned.”

Devonta Freeman Placed On IR With Groin Injury

Oct 16, 2018 4:49 PM

Devonta Freeman has been placed on injured reserve with a groin injury.

"Following the game against Pittsburgh, where Devonta injured his foot, we thought he was just having general soreness in his groin area," Quinn said. "As the week went on, it continued, so we decided to have him get some tests. It has been determined that he will need a procedure that will result in us placing him on injured reserve.

"We are hopeful he will be able to return this season, but we will have a better feel for that in the coming weeks."

A source told ESPN that Freeman has not yet scheduled the procedure.

Freeman played in just two of the first six games while slowed by knee, foot and groin injuries.
