The New England Patriots came back from a 28-3 deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in the first overtime of Super Bowl history.

New England scored 31 unanswered points, culminating in a James White touchdown in overtime. The Patriots were down 28-3 as late as 2:06 remaining in the third quarter when White scored the first of his three touchdowns. Stephen Gostkowski missed the extra point but made a field goal with 9:44 remaining in the fourth to make it a two-score game.

Danny Amendola scored on a six-yard pass with 5:56 remaining in the fourth with White converting the two-point conversion and then it was White scoring on a one-yard run with Amendola on the two-point conversion to tie the game at 28-28 with under a minute left in the fourth quarter. 

Tom Brady, who was named MVP for the fourth time, went 43-for-62 for 466 yards and two touchdowns. Brady and Bill Belichick have now combined to win a record five Super Bowls. Belichick also won two Super Bowls as defensive coordinator of the New York Giants, bringing his total to seven.
