The New England Patriots have signed starting safety Patrick Chung to a three-year contract extension through 2017, a deal that could be worth up to $8.2 million and includes $3.4 million in guarantees, according to a source.

Chung was a second round pick by the Patriots in 2009 and spent one season with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013.

As part of the extension, Chung received a $2.4 million signing bonus. He will earn base salaries of $1 million in 2015, $1.4 million in 2016 and $1.8 million in 2017.
