As early as after the 2013 season, Joe Philbin was blaming the Miami Dolphins' issues on Ryan Tannehill.

Before the 2014 NFL Draft, Philbin pushed for the Dolphins to draft a quarterback.

The Dolphins wanted to address the offensive line and were focused on Ja'Waun James, while Philbin wanted the team to select Derek Carr. Dennis Hickey selected James and then Jarvis Landry in the second round.

The Dolphins hired Adam Gase as head coach in big part to work with Tannehill.
