The Seattle Seahawks will sign former Miami Dolphins linebacker Jerome Baker to a one-year, $7 million contract, Baker's agents, Drew and Jason Rosenhaus, told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Saturday.
Seattle Seahawks Wiretap
The Seattle Seahawks have acquired Sam Howell in a trade with the Washington Commanders that also involved 2024 draft picks.
The Seahawks received Howell, a fourth-round draft pick (No. 102 overall) and a sixth-rounder (No. 179) in exchange for picks in the third (No. 78) and fifth (No. 152) rounds.
Seattle general manager John Schneider said "several" other teams were involved in possibly trading for Howell and that Seattle is acquiring him to be Geno Smith's backup - not to compete with Smith for the starting job.
"He had a great day against us this past fall," Schneider told Seattle Sports 710-AM. "He's a quarterback but he's really a football player. That's what I love about him. Really tough, young. He's 23 years old and has 18 starts in the league already. He's the same age as like [Jayden] Daniels from LSU and [Spencer] Rattler and [Michael] Penix [Jr.], and he's a year younger than Bo Nix.
"We were just really excited to be able to acquire him. We know he's a serious dude. He's into it, he works his tail off. We got great reviews on him and we loved him coming out of college. So yeah, we're happy to get him in the mix. Geno's the guy and Sam will be backing him up."
The Seattle Seahawks have released Jamal Adams.
Adams, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, was set to make a nonguaranteed $16.5 million in 2024 and count $26.9 million against the salary cap -- untenable amounts for a player who has been unable to stay on the field or get to the quarterback since his stellar Seattle debut in 2020.
The Seahawks are not using a post-June 1 designation with Adams' release, a source told ESPN. That means they will save $6.1 million against the 2024 cap, according to Over The Cap, while absorbing all of his $20.83 million in dead money right away.
After moving on from Pete Carroll after 14 seasons, the Seattle Seahawks might also see a change at quarterback.
There is no guarantee Geno Smith will be the team's starter in 2024.
During a recent interview, new coach Mike Macdonald was asked if Smith and Drew Lock would be "involved in the future of this organization going forward," and he was very non-committal with his answer.
"That's a tough question and it's one that I probably can't answer right now," Macdonald said. "But we're doing a lot of work on those guys and I've had conversations just to get to know them and understand who they are as people and their background, and goals and what their family's like and where they're from. I didn't know anything about them coming into this whole thing. So, right now we're in the phase of figuring out who they are."
Former NFL star Richard Sherman was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the Washington State Patrol.
In a probable cause statement, trooper Jordan Hazzard-Thomas, who helped respond to the traffic stop, reported talking to Sherman and noticing "the odor of intoxicants" and that Sherman's eyes appeared to be "bloodshot and watery."
The Seattle Seahawks have restructured Geno Smith's contract, converting his $9.6 million roster bonus into a signing bonus and creating $4.8 million in 2024 salary cap space, according to a source.
The restructure will spread the $9.6 million evenly over the next two seasons, while his cap hit this season will drop from $31.2 million to $26.4 million.
The quarterback's cap hit jumps to $38.5 million, however.
Running back Mike Davis, who played for six NFL teams in eight seasons, announced his retirement on Monday, his 31st birthday.
Davis had 2,052 rushing yards with 14 touchdowns and 1,066 receiving yards with four touchdowns in a career with Seattle, San Francisco, Carolina, Atlanta, Chicago and Baltimore.
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith, who has $12.7 million on his contract that is set to become fully guaranteed Friday, was informed Thursday that he will remain on Seattle's roster through this week, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Smith's contract calls for his $12.7 million base salary for next season to become fully guaranteed Friday provided he's still on the roster. That money was guaranteed for injury only at the time Smith signed his three-year, $75 million deal last March.
The Seattle Seahawks are hiring former University of Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb to the same position on new coach Mike Macdonald's staff, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Pete Thamel on Friday.
Grubb had accepted the Alabama offensive coordinator job after spending the past two seasons at UW under former Huskies and current Tide coach Kalen DeBoer, coordinating a pass-heavy offense that ranked sixth in FBS in yards per game (487.0) and sixth in scoring (36.7) in that span.
The Seattle Seahawks plan to hire Aden Durde as their defensive coordinator under new coach Mike Macdonald, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Friday.
Durde was the Dallas Cowboys' defensive line coach for the past three seasons under then-coordinator Dan Quinn.
