The pitfalls have already been dug, the excuses - some more legitimate than others - for losing tonight at Indiana are ready-made and packaged for the Nets. The Nets could be complacent after a surprising 5-1 start. The 6-2 Pacers will definitely be vengeful after blowing a 13-point fourth-quarter lead to the Nets in the season opener. And worst of all, how could they possibly focus on basketball after flying the same night an airplane crashed in Queens, killing hundreds?

Several Nets sat in the training room watching news reports of American Airlines Flight 587's explosion over and plummet into Rockaway. Then they went out and practiced, preparing for the biggest test of their young season, and boarded a plane themselves.
