On that fateful Thursday, Nov. 7, 1991, we all knew one thing was for certain: That Magic Johnson would be dead soon. Even though he was announcing that it was the, "HIV virus I have attained," the feeling was that the virus would soon lead to AIDS and that the best point guard who ever lived would deteriorate right in front of our eyes and die a sorry, pitiful death. It's 10 years later, and Magic is still leading the fast break through life. "The medicine has done its thing; I think I've done my part," he said last week. "And God has done his part. It's mind over matter, too. I've never felt I would be sick or get sick. "I thought I would be here." Magic, 42, still has HIV, but he does not yet have AIDS. A part owner of some major brand-name franchises including Starbucks, TGI Friday's, and 24-hour Fitness Club, Magic has had enough money for the best available drugs to combat HIV. His doctor, Michael Mellman, told the Los Angeles Times that advances in medicine have allowed Magic to go from taking medication four to six times a day to twice a day. He works out six hours each morning. He said the last blood test he took showed the virus was undetectable. It's "...in a dormant state," Mellman said. |
