One is too old. One is too young. One is too small. And Andrew DeClercq is back in Doc Rivers' doghouse. That's the state of the Magic's four-man center committee as they open a big five-game Western swing tonight against the Lakers. But it may be changing constantly throughout the 82-game season. The original plan was for 39-year-old Patrick Ewing to start, but Rivers seems to be drifting farther way from that all the time. DeClerq started 51 games last season and the first five this year, but he didn't even play in Friday night's 115-105 victory over Sacramento. Nor did the 6-foot-8 Don Reid. DeClercq and Reid will be heard from again, no doubt. But for now the starter is 6-10, 220-pound rookie Steven Hunter, who just turned 20. Rivers had not anticipated getting Hunter into the mix so soon and doesn't consider him a center. |
