49ers Place Smiley On IR

AP - The 49ers put right guard Justin Smiley on injured reserve Thursday, one day after the starting lineman decided to undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder.

Smiley, who has started every game for the 49ers over the past 2 1/2 years, was hurt while diving to recover a fumble in Sunday's loss at Atlanta. Smiley tore his labrum and severely dislocated his shoulder. [READ]
