Bowden Clarifies Jabs At Carr

The State - Tommy Bowden telephoned Michigan coach Lloyd Carr earlier this week to clarify comments perceived as jabs by several national media outlets.

After Clemson beat Furman last weekend, Bowden told reporters: ?We won. That?s not something Lloyd Carr can say,? a reference to the Wolverines? season-opening upset loss to Appalachian State.

Bowden seemed to make the statement in the context of relief, that the Tigers had defeated a quality championship subdivision opponent. But he later received a printout of the article from the Detroit Free Press Web site entitled, ?Bowden Rips Carr.?

?I was shocked,? Bowden said. ?Appalachian State and Furman are rivals, so it would be very natural for me to make a comparison. I guess people in that part of the country are not familiar with the Appalachian State-Furman rivalry and how close it?s been.? [READ]
