Colts To Franchise Freeney?
5th February, 2007 - 9:06 am
Hartford Courant - Dwight Freeney is poised to become an unrestricted free agent, unless the Colts stick a franchise tag on him.

"I don't know what's going to happen," said Freeney, the Colts' all-time sack leader (56 1/2) after five seasons.

The Colts have two choices, according to NFL rules.

If they attach an "exclusive" franchise tag on Freeney, they must offer a one-year contract for at least the average of the top five salaries at the player's position, or give him a 20 percent raise, whichever is greater.

A "non-exclusive" franchise tag would allow Freeney to negotiate with other teams, but the Colts can match any offer. If they don't, they will get two first-round draft picks as compensation. [READ]
