| 14th July, 2005 - 9:07 pm |  SF Chronicle - The Dallas Cowboys traded cornerback Pete Hunter to the New York Jets on Thursday for a conditional draft pick.
Hunter played in only three games last season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He asked for a trade following the 2004 season, after sliding on the depth chart behind free-agent acquisitions Anthony Henry and Aaron Glenn, and Terence Newman.
In three seasons, Hunter has played in 30 games with three interceptions, nine passes defended and two fumbles recovered. He is an Atlantic City, N.J., native who likes the idea of playing closer to home. The Jets also need depth at cornerback.
"Pete is a player we identified a few months ago as someone who will provide depth to our secondary," Jets general manager Terry Bradway said. "He's a big, physical corner, who will contribute on defense and special teams. We believe he has upside, and that our coaches can put him in position to make plays."
Hunter will play out the remaining one-year, $656,000 deal he has now. Players report to training camp July 28.
"After talking to him and realizing he had passion and he wanted an opportunity to start, we spoke to the Cowboys," said Hunter's agent, Raymond Savage. "They were willing to make something happen because they are fairly deep at corner." [READ] |
