"This has been one of the best years of my life," he said, alluding not only to reaching the NFC Championship Game with the Falcons in January, but being honored by the NFL weeks later when he was given the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.
"I'm blessed. These things don't come around often. A lot of what I do is because of my mom [the late Betty Smothers, a former Baton Rouge police officer killed in an off-duty shooting in 1993].
