The Indianapolis Colts, who will take a 13-1 record into Saturday?s game at Seattle, landed more than half a dozen players on the AFC Pro Bowl squad today.
First-time selections are center Jeff Saturday, linebacker Cato June and safety Bob Sanders. They join quarterback Peyton Manning, wide receiver Marvin Harrison, running back Edgerrin James and defensive end Dwight Freeney.
Among the players left off the team were wide receiver Reggie Wayne, whose 81 receptions are second and 1,034 yards third among AFC wide receivers, and special-teams standout Robert Mathis.
The game pitting the best players from each conference is Feb. 12 in Honolulu.
Sanders? selection comes in his second year, and first as a full-time starter. He?s the first Colts? defensive back to be selected for the Pro Bowl since 1971 when Bob Vogel and Rich Volk were honored.
?I really didn?t expect it, man,?? Sanders said. ?I really don?t know how to feel right now. I know my parents are really excited for me.
?It?s an honor, a great honor.??
June echoed Sanders? sentiments. Coach Tony Dungy informed the team of its Pro Bowl representation during a morning practice.
?They announced all the guys that made the Pro Bowl, and my name popped up on the list,?? June said. ?It was exciting.??
Freeney?s selection was his third straight.
