| 7th November, 2005 - 8:53 pm |  ESPN - Three-time Pro Bowl kicker David Akers, who has been seeking for several months to have his contract upgraded, got his wish Monday, as the Philadelphia Eagles rewarded him with a three-year extension through the 2010 season.
Akers, 30, is the second standout player Eagles team president Joe Banner has signed to an extension in the past two days. On Sunday, the team signed tailback Brian Westbrook to a five-year extension, also through 2010, worth just shy of $25 million.
Details of the Akers extension, which has been in the works for some time, were not yet available. His existing contract included base salaries of $1.025 million for this season, $1.175 million for 2006 and $1.325 million for 2007. Those base salaries may be affected by the new deal.
It is typical for the Eagles, and for Banner, regarded by many as the NFL's premier salary cap manager, to negotiate a few deals with key players during the season. Helping to spur the negotiations with both Westbrook and Akers was the fact that Monday was the league deadline for being able to sign extensions, and have much of the money directed in this year's cap. As usual, Philadelphia had plenty of cap room to spare, with more than $10 million in space before the latest two extensions. [READ] |
