This battle is one between two defensive players, something that we haven?t seen much of in this NFL ?Be A GM Contest.? The contest has been dominated by offensive stars like Peyton Manning and LaDainian Tomlinson. The winner of this battle may very well end up being the last defensive player standing, so take your time when deciding which you?d rather have to start a franchise with.

The Case For Urlacher

The old cliche reads: ?defense wins championships.? So if you want to select a player to begin a franchise with Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher might be your man. A six-year veteran, he has a great deal of experience and still a handful of good years left in his 260-pound frame. A first round pick by Chicago in 2000, Brian has accumulated impressive numbers with over seven hundred tackles, and has forced over a dozen turnovers in his career.

The Case Against Urlacher
One might argue that at 27 years of age, Urlacher?s best years are behind him. On the contrary, he exploded for one hundred and twenty-two tackles and six sacks last season. While, a linebacker is an important part of any successful NFL team, other positions such as offensive players like quarterback, running back, and wide receiver might hold even greater importance.

The Case For Hawk

A.J. Hawk has yet to make his NFL debut, but he seems to be ready to make an immediate impact on his NFC North opponents. Hawk, who was one of the nation?s best linebackers, didn?t play against inferior competition as a member of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Playing with one of the best NCAA programs means that A.J. was also able to play against some of the best competition in all of college football. His instincts are unquestionable and tested extraordinarily well before the draft.

The Case Against Hawk

As with all the other rookies in the competition, Hawk has yet to prove that he can make an impact on the NFL gridiron. Hawk will still have to adapt to the many different nuances of the professional game, and doing so with the struggling Packers isn?t the ideal situation for the rookie linebacker, but maybe Brett Favre meant him when he said this was the most talented team he?s played for. We may not know whether he?s worthy of a franchise-cornerstone pick for a few years.
