The next second round match-up is yet another quarterback battle, this one between two AFC North rivals. Ben Roethlisberger is fresh off a Super Bowl victory, while Carson Palmer is fresh off surgery to repair a severely injured right knee. The injury took place in the playoffs last season against none other than Roethlisberger?s Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Case For Palmer

Carson had a breakout season last year, throwing thirty-two touchdowns passes and well over 3,800 yards for the Cincinnati Bengals. If he hadn?t been injured while leading Cincinnati on a strong playoff run, Palmer may very well have played the role Roethlisberger did in last year?s Super Bowl. Carson will be out to prove doubters wrong in 2006 as he looks to pick up where he left off in 2005, reconstructed knee and all.

The Case Against Palmer

Palmer seems to possess the drive, talent, and arm to become a Peyton Manning-like offensive force in the NFL. With that said, there?s really only one knock against Palmer at this point in his career, and that?s whether or not he will return to 100% after he severely injured his knee last January. Reports are now surfacing that Carson may not be ready to play when Cincinnati opens this season.

The Case For Roethlisberger

Offer any NFL GM the chance to have Roethlisberger on his roster and they?ll jump at the chance to have a young quarterback who shows up in big games and wins more often than not. Big Ben has learned what it takes to win football games extremely quickly, and he could have many more Super Bowl battles left before it?s all said and done. The AFC is full of elite quarterbacks including Peyton Manning, but Big Ben has something on all of them - he won the most recent Super Bowl, the youngest starting QB to do so.

The Case Against Roethlisberger

Ben?s recent motorcycle accident has led many to believe that Roethlisberger needs to be more responsible and cautious off the field - in order to ensure that he?ll remain on it. Doctors have sworn that there are no lingering injuries from the accident that will affect his play, but until I see him on the gridiron, I?ll remain skeptical. Other than his off-the-field adventures Ben is as consistent as they come. His performance in the Super Bowl may not have been memorable (he had a 22.6 QB rating), but no one will soon forget the open-field tackle of Nick Harper that saved the game against Indianapolis.
