Today?s battle is between a pair of players who are quite similar, but also very different. Reggie Bush is football?s most talked about rookie running back, while Cadillac Williams was last season?s top rookie rusher. Both men stand 5'11" tall, but Cadillac has a seventeen pound advantage on Bush, who is the faster of the two. Williams started his NFL career with quite a bang, and only time will tell if Bush can do the same.
Case for Bush
Reggie Bush is one of the most hyped rookies in the history of the NFL, and rightfully so. He dazzled his way to the Heisman Trophy in his last season at USC, and just fell short of winning a national title against Vince Young and his Texas Longhorns. Bush is a freakish athlete whose athleticism is only matched by his blazing speed and cool charisma. He is also extremely versatile with his ability to catch passes when lined up in the slot. He is the kind of player who could end up winning games with performances that everyone discusses at the water cooler on Monday mornings.
Case Against Bush
He might be the most athletic of all NFL running backs, but Reggie?s yet to prove that he can be durable. At USC, he shared carries with LenDale White, a big workhorse back, who most often received the ball over Bush near the end zone. The question remains as to whether Bush can carry a full rushing load in the NFL, and whether or not, he?s durable enough to keep going after he?s been tackled thirty times.
Case for Cadillac
He burst onto the scene last season with three consecutive one hundred-plus yard games to begin his career, and only an injury a handful of games into the season was able to slow him down. The good news for Tampa Bay fans is that he returned to form towards the end of the season and finished the season with 1,178 yards and six touchdowns. Consider the fact that he missed two games and split time in another five and you?ve got yourself a 1,500 yard rusher, easy.
Case Against Cadillac
Since last year was Cadillac?s first in the NFL, we have yet to know whether or not the injury bug is something that will constantly bite him. If he remains healthy this season, he?s a lock to obtain elite running back status, but if he goes down again he could remain in the middle of the pack. Add in the fact that he?s matched up against a much more marketable running back, and getting past the first round could be difficult for the former Auburn standout.
