Thursday?s match-up pits a Sportscenter-made superstar quarterback against one of the most intimidating defenders in all of professional football. Michael Vick is a two-way threat on the field, he can run the ball just as easily as he can rocket it pass you. Julius Peppers on the other hand can drop back in coverage as a defensive lineman just as easily as he can blow past you. Both of these players are freakish athletes, but which would you choose to start a franchise with?

Case for Vick

Vick plays the most important position on the gridiron, quarterback. That gives him a huge advantage over any opponent. He?s also one of the most popular players in the NFL, and has a long list of memorable highlight-reel plays to his credit. In five NFL seasons, he?s accumulated a total of seventy touchdowns, with nineteen of them coming on the ground. He?s a lock to get around five hundred rushing yards a season, but he could threaten to break the 1,000 yard mark on the ground if he stays healthy.

Case Against Vick

His history of injury could hurt him in a match-up against Peppers, who has played in every regular season game for the Panthers over the last three seasons. Another knock against Vick is his arm, and that?s scary because he is the Falcons quarterback. He?s struggled to learn the west coast offense, as many quarterbacks have, but his problems go beyond that. His career completion percentage is just over fifty-four percent and he?s averaged more yards per carry than yards per pass in three of his five seasons.

Case for Peppers

Like Vick, Peppers is one of the best athletes in the NFL and that?s a scary thought when you consider the fact that he?s 6'7" and weighs 283 pounds. In addition to being one of the best defensive ends in the league, he also anchors one of football?s toughest defenses and has appeared in a Super Bowl in his short career. He has 40.5 sacks in four seasons, and had a incredible rookie total of a dozen sacks in 2002 when he played in only twelve games. If you?re picking a franchise defensive end, Peppers is your man.

Case Against Peppers

As good as Peppers is, he doesn?t play as important of a position as his opponent does. He does have an effect on every play he?s a part of but a lot of times his work goes completely unnoticed by the casual football fan. I?m also worried that opposing linemen may have figured out his secrets as his stats were lower in every solo defensive category last season than they were in 2004.
