Our second NFC North battle pits one of football?s best offensive linemen against one of it?s newest linebackers. Steve Hutchinson helped Seattle?s Shaun Alexander have a career-year in 2005, but bolted to Minnesota after appearing in the Super Bowl with the Seahawks last season. Hawk was one of the nation?s best defenders last season, and will begin his NFL career playing defense for the Green Bay Packers.

Case for Hawk

A.J. Hawk has yet to make his NFL debut, but he seems to be ready to make an immediate impact on his NFC North opponents. Hawk, who was one of the nation?s best linebackers, didn?t play against inferior competition as a member of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Playing with one of the countries best programs means that A.J. was also able to play against some of the best competition in all of college football.

His instincts are unquestionable and tested extraordinarily well before the draft.

Case Against Hawk

As with all the other rookies in the competition, Hawk has yet to prove that he can make an impact on the NFL gridiron. Hawk will still have to adapt to the many different nuances of the professional game, and doing so with the struggling Packers isn?t the ideal situation for the rookie linebacker. We may not know whether he?s worthy of a franchise-cornerstone pick for a few years.

Case for Hutchinson

While important to every team?s offense, the offensive lineman isn?t one of the most glamorous positions in the game of football. So picking Hutchinson over any player in this competition might be difficult for some, but when you consider what Hutchinson was a part of in Seattle, you have to realize the effect he can have on your offense. He helped Shaun Alexander set records on the ground last year, and he could help Minnesota revitalize their running game in 2006.

Case Against Hutchinson

I?m not knocking Hutchinson, but if you have a running back and quarterback that are talented enough, they?ll be able to be somewhat productive no matter who?s guarding them. While Hutchinson has the skills to make the bad good, and the good even better an offensive lineman could be forgotten about when selecting a franchise player.

The choice is yours - Who would you pick to start an NFL franchise with?
