Our first NFC North match-up involves a defensive behemoth and a young, promising wide receiver. The Chicago Bears have recently returned to the defensive dominance that got them to a Super Bowl in the mid-eighties. Urlacher, one of the NFL best linebackers, has been a big part of the return of Chicago?s stingy defense. Williams, who has two seasons under his belt as a member of the Lions? receiving corps, has sixteen touchdowns in his two-year career.
Case for Urlacher
The old cliche reads: ?defense wins championships.? So if you want to select a player to begin a franchise with Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher might be your man. A six-year veteran, he has a great deal of experience and still a handful of good years left in his 260-pound frame. A first round pick by Chicago in 2000, Brian has accumulated impressive numbers with over seven hundred tackles, and has forced over a dozen turnovers in his career.
Case Against Urlacher
One might argue that at 27 years of age, Urlacher?s best years are behind him. On the contrary, he exploded for one hundred and twenty-two tackles and six sacks last season. While, a linebacker is an important part of any successful NFL team, other positions such as offensive players like quarterback, running back, and wide receiver might hold even greater importance.
Case for Williams
Roy has youth, promise, and talent on his side. Entering his third season as an NFL wide-out, Williams is primed for a breakout season. A stronger quarterback situation in Detroit would lend for even more promise from Williams, but maybe Kitna can change that this fall. He missed three games and parts of two others last season which hurt his 2005 numbers. After flirting with the 1,000 yard mark in his rookie season, Roy scored eight touchdowns to go along with just 687 yards in only eleven full games last season.
Case Against Williams
For all Williams promise, there has to be some doubt surrounding his health entering the 2006 season. Only time will tell whether or not Williams will fit well into Mike Martz?s offensive system and whether or not, he?ll mesh well with the newly acquired Kitna. Staying healthy will be the key for Roy, but there are several other wide receivers, I would pick to start a franchise with other than Williams.
The choice is yours - Who would you pick to start an NFL franchise with?
