As the first round continues to motor on, we feature a match-up between two more NFC East rivals as we pit Donovan McNabb of the Eagles against Clinton Portis of the Redskins. Did Portis leave his magic in Denver? Can McNabb rekindle the greatness of his 2004 season after shedding Terrell Owens this winter?
The Case for McNabb
Donovan McNabb has done something a lot of quarterbacks like him have never been able to do. He shed the title of scrambler, and has become one of the league?s best passers in the process. Entering his eighth season in the league, McNabb is now better suited to tackle the struggles he will face during the 2006 season. He?s healthy and has control of his team once again. That?s music to the ears of Philadelphia fans.
The Case against McNabb
For all the things Donovan has going for him, he has had a rather injured-plagued career. He?s missed significant time in three of his seven years in the league. He has also been, possibly unfairly, labeled as ?the guy who can?t win the big one.? It took several tries for him to finally get the Eagles to the Super Bowl, and once there, some say he crumbled down the stretch.
The Case for Portis
Clinton Portis became one of many to thrive in the Denver Bronco?s running game, and when he came to Washington, many doubted that he would be able to have the same effect on the game as a Redskin. In 2004, his first year in Washington, he ran for a career-low 1,315 yards and scored just four touchdowns. However, he rebounded nicely last year with 1,516 rushing yards and eleven touchdowns.
The Case against Portis
He seems to have returned to where he was when he left Denver before the 2004 season, but is that good enough for him to surpass McNabb and move into the second round? In my opinion, there is a long list of running backs ahead of Portis, but how many quarterbacks would you rather have than McNabb?
The choice is yours ? Who will make it to the second round?
