The eighth match-up marks the mid-point of the first round of our ?Be an NFL GM? Contest. It also pits two of football?s most popular and explosive players against each other in a battle for the ages. Would you rather employ Randy Moss?s hands and length or LaDainian Tomlinson?s feet? Vote now or forever hold your peace.

The Case for Moss

He may not be the same player he was a few years ago, but he?s still one of the NFL?s top receivers. Despite an injured-plagued 2005 season, he still appeared in all of the Raiders? sixteen games and was able to haul in sixty catches for 1,005 yards and eight touchdowns. The further development of Oakland?s offense and the arrival of new quarterback Aaron Brooks could mean a top-flight effort from Moss in 2006.

The Case against Moss

Moss is twenty-nine years of age, not old for an NFL wide receiver, but he does seem to be giving way to injuries lately. He played in just thirteen games in 2004 for the Vikings, and limped through last season with several minor injures. The risk that he?ll either get injured or start in-fighting among his teammates might be too high to take him over a player like Tomlinson.

The Case for Tomlinson

LaDainian has never run for fewer than 1,200 yards and scored less than ten touchdowns in his five-year NFL career. That?s good enough for me. Add in the fact that he?s also caught one hundred passes in a season, and that he threw three touchdown passes last season and you have yourself a franchise cornerstone.

The Case against Tomlinson

He?s still young so it?s hard to form a legitimate case against Tomlinson at this point in his career, though you could make an argument that Antonio Gates or Shawne Merriman could have just as easily been the San Diego representative. The only thing I could come up with against LT specifically is that the Chargers have run him too much too early, and he?ll have a shorter career than most elite running backs do.
