Our seventh match-up features a battle between a newly acquired stud wide receiver, and a running back that had the best nine-game stretch in history last season. Javon Walker, a former Packer, packed his bags for Denver this offseason and hopes to be a huge part of the Broncos' offense this season. Johnson, who spent his early years as a back-up to Priest Holmes, has finally broken out and is running all over his NFL opponents.
The Case for Walker
In 2004, Walker had a break-out season for the Packers as he caught eighty-nine passes for 1,382 yards and twelve touchdowns. After such amazing production, Green Bay was hoping for more of the same in 2005, but a season-ending injury suffered in the first game of the season put those dreams to rest. He seems to have healed properly and I wouldn?t be surprised if we see another stud-like performance from him in 2006.
The Case against Walker
During his four years as an NFL wide receiver, he?s only had one good season. While last year was lost due to injury, there still has to be concerns about whether or not his amazing numbers in 2004 were a fluke. Add in the fact that you always have to be cautious of players returning from serious injuries and Walker might be looking at a first round exit.
The Case for Johnson
Larry Johnson put on quite a show in the second half of the 2005 season, and it looks like he has only hit the tip of the iceberg. Having finally surpassed Holmes on the Kansas City depth chart, offensive glory seems to be Larry?s for the taking. It?s scary when 2,000 yards doesn?t seem out of the question for a 26-year old running back.
The Case against Johnson
Although, Johnson has passed Holmes on the Chiefs? depth chart, the fact that Priest, though barely, is still in the picture can?t make Larry feel 100% secure in his position, but he seems to use things like that as a motivator. Also, the hiring of Herm Edwards as the new Kansas City coach could mean a slightly different offensive philosophy for the Chiefs this season.
