Our fifth match-up features the first overall pick from the 2006 Draft and the game?s best quarterback. Thus far the trend has gone in the direction of the man with the ball in his hands on every offensive down, but is there something in Mario Williams that Houston sees and we still haven?t?

The Case for Williams

The simple fact that he was taken with the first pick in this year?s rookie draft, ahead of guys like Vince Young and Reggie Bush, has to mean something. The 6?7? defensive end from North Carolina State has great footwork and has been often compared to the Carolina Panther?s Julius Peppers. He?s more experienced than most heading into the NFL because he was a starter for N.C. State as a freshman.

The Case against Williams

Williams, like all the other rookies in the field, faces the disadvantage of lacking experience. Having yet to play an NFL down, he has yet to prove that he?s worth either the number one overall pick, or your vote in this contest. Also, having been drafted by the Texans places him in a division with Peyton Manning, and quarterbacks seem to be rolling through to the second round.

The Case for Manning

Peyton is simply the best pure quarterback in football. He?s still only a year removed from breaking Dan Marino?s single-season touchdown record, and last season he led the Colts to an incredible winning streak to begin the season. Without question he?s the smartest field general in the NFL.

The Case against Manning

It?s hard to develop much of a case against Manning. You could consider the fact that he hasn?t made a Super Bowl in his nine-year career, but a lot of great players don?t make it to sports? biggest event. Over thinking is another one of Manning?s weaknesses, particularly when blitzed. His improvisation skills are better when reading defenses before the ball is snapped and he is calling last moment audibles than when the ball is in his hands.
