In light of Brett Favre publicly announcing that he is seriously considering hanging up his cleats, I?ve decided to try and make his choice an easier one.

Brett, please retire.

At 36 years old you?re already one of the NFL?s all-time greatest players. You?re the NFL?s only three-time MVP winner (1995-97). You?ve participated in two Super Bowls, winning one over the New England Patriots in 1997, and you stand in third place on the all-time quarterback win list with 135 - behind only Dan Marino and John Elway. On route to all those accolades you?ve become one of America?s favorite football heroes.

In an interview that recently aired on ESPN you said that, ?If I had to pick right now and make a decision, I would say I?m not coming back.? Should you decide to retire it would be in not only your best interest, but in the best interest of the Green Bay Packers as well.

The signs are there. In 2005 you threw a career-high 29 interceptions, and failed to throw over 20 touchdowns passes for only the second time since the 1994 season. You also had a career-low QB rating of 70.9 and lost more fumbles (7) than you have in any other season. Not too mention that your Packers had their first losing season since 1992, the year you were traded to Green Bay by Atlanta.

You also need to make your decision rather quickly so that the Packers will have time to prepare for off-season personnel decisions, and the upcoming NFL draft. As Green Bay?s roster stands right now your successor at quarterback would be either Aaron Rodgers or Craig Nail, who have a combined 49 career passing attempts between them. In contrast, twice during the 2005 season you attempted more than 49 passes in a single game.

Even in your old age you still have a strong fan base, your jersey ranked in the top ten for most popular sellers last year. You?re the NFL version of the Iron Man having started 221 consecutive games at quarterback. While your legacy will remain intact whether you decide to return or not, you don?t want to overstay your welcome like Emmitt Smith did, and like Deion Sanders has.

So Brett, hang ?em up.

I respect you as most Americans do, but we don?t want to see you struggle the way you did this past season. Do the right thing and make way for a new era in Green Bay.
