Unlucky number 80, no not just because one-time Florida State thug, Laveraneus Coles(now departed) once wore this number. But that’s how many regular season games the Washington Redskins have played without a postseason appearance.

Five entire seasons of either finishing at the bottom of the NFC East or just being a mediocre .500 team.

Although, as a Redskins fan it’s okay to sometimes feel that you may have been dealt a bad hand. Hey if owner Dan Snyder is able to take gambles on overpriced and underachiever veterans(no need to name any names), then as a fan you have the right to feel like you’ve been hustled. Do you really want to know when Redskins fans got hustled? They let Running back and the all-time leader in all-purpose yards go in Brian Mitchell, to make room for “Prime Time” Deion Sanders. Mitchell hit it right on the head the day that he heard the news, that this was going to be a sad day in Washington history.

The Redskins gave away a man that did everything for them. Mitchell was always the energy of the Skins, the guy who made the play in big games against teams like Dallas and Philadelphia. Some teams give these type of players a name….Leader and heart of the team. Late in a game against Philadelphia, Mitchell even lined-up behind center and ran the option and completed a few passes. Mitchell was a quarterback in College at the University of Hawaii but made the transition to Running back/ Special teams returner for a chance to make the ball club. What did the Redskins get out of Sanders? An earful from the self proclaimed “Prime Time,” on how good he was. “Prime Time,” was more like “Crime Time.” He took the money and ran.

For Redskins fan September is approaching quick and the faithful are repeating the same words they have said for the last five seasons, “This is the year. I just know it.” Well this very well could be the year, but we have to decide on whether we have a Mitchell on this team and who is it going to be?

Who’s going to bring the energy to make FedEx Field rock in the way that RFK Stadium used to? Quite possibly it could be Clinton Portis or Santana Moss. Or could it be newly acquired Wideout David Patten who knows how to win? Or will Skins fans be dealt another case of free-agent signing woes? Nobody can really say for sure, but the great thing is that even if this isn’t the year, we will all be back here next year repeating the same words. “This is the year. I just know it.”
