Best pick: Smith
Worst pick: Ross
Analysis:
The theme here is missed opportunity. They certainly needed a CB, but Ross is more of what they already have, an inconsistent gambler who will give up a big play for every one he makes. He will help in run support and the return game.
Smith is a very good value at #51 and offers big-play potential opposite Plaxico Burress.
Most scouts see Alford as an undersized backup, and he likely would have lasted at least one more round if they really wanted him.
DeOssie and Boss are both small-school guys, which generally means adjustment time and a lower ceiling, though I do think Boss fits nicely as their #2 TE.
Koets, Johnson, and Bradshaw all carry the same dreaded labels from scouts--immature underachievers.
Grade: D
They reached for lesser needs and put off more immediate impact at more pressing spots for marginal prospects later on. Other than Smith and maybe Boss, none of the players they selected is better than the players they are supposed to replace at some point, though Ross could develop into a very solid corner with more discipline. |
