The picks:
1st round, #5 overall--Levi Brown, T, Penn State
2nd round, #33--Alan Branch, DT, Michigan
3rd round, #69--Buster Davis, LB, Florida State
5th round, #142--Steve Breaston, WR, Michigan
7th round, #215--Ben Patrick, TE, Delaware
Best pick: Patrick
Worst pick: Breaston
Analysis:
I'm amazed the Cards aren't taking more heat for reaching for Brown at #5; he's a very good run blocker, which is certainly a primary need, but was no better than the 9th ranked player on most draft boards. Two teams I am aware of had Joe Staley (the 28th pick) rated higher than Brown at T.
Branch's stock plummeted but could be a very good fit as the DL anchor for the Cardinals. Many mocks had Branch going to Arizona with the #5 pick a month ago.
Davis lacks ideal size and speed but at worst will upgrade their special teams and bolster their depth. Breaston is a wasted pick unless they use him exclusively as a return man.
The selection of Patrick could be the saving grace, as he carried a 3rd round grade and will be extra motivated to prove that's where he belonged.
Grade: D
Arizona reached for need with their 1st pick and chose guys with declining stock with their other 4 picks. If Brown isn't starting right away this grade drops to F. |
