The year was 1983 and the month was December. I was just a little snotty-nose kid at a tender age of 6. Back then I loved the Skins as I do now, and the holidays were just around the corner. A television commercial had came on during a break of my favorite TV show, “The Redskins Report with George Michaels,” that had old number 65 playing old Saint Nick. For years I had believed that Dave Butz was Santa Clause and when I found out that he really wasn’t I was so upset. I mean sooooooo upset. I thought it would just be fitting that a Washington Redskins player could really be Santa.
The time has changed but the feelings towards the Skins have never changed. In fact, thanks to two new friends, Ashley Buchanan and John Woloshen, they have brought me back to believing that just maybe a Redskins player is the old Saint Nick. I really believe it because on Christmas Eve, Santa Moss (Thanks Ashley and John for that one) was spreading joy to Skins fans, while delivering a crushing blow to Giants fans that were left feeling like there was a voodoo doll of Tiki Barber floating around.
In just his first year with the Washington Redskins, Moss is continually proving why he is deserving of his first pro-bowl invitation. Moss has grabbed 80 passes for 1,400 yards and 9 touchdowns, but that isn’t even the impressive part. With one game left to go Moss is within 37 yards of breaking the Redskins all-time single season pass receiving yards that was set by the once great Bobby Mitchell. Let’s just say for some reason that the Philadelphia Fleagles decide to put 11-men in coverage on Moss this week and he doesn’t get the record. It wouldn’t really matter, would it? Well, I say No. In week 2 out in Dallas, Moss made me a believer. The two touchdowns in the remaining minutes made me really think that this was the year. Then he (Santa Moss) goes and has another great game last week that helped us return the favor to the Giants on our way to the 35-20 win. The win put us in a position that we have not seen in 5 full seasons. We win and we’re in (The playoffs that is). Thanks to Moss being on the field has left the Skins with great opportunities to hit Chris Cooley on big passes, and has frightened defenses into over playing the pass enabling Clinton Portis to run for once again another 1,000 yards.
This years run has been so great that I am in fear of saying what I really want to, just because I don’t want to jinx us. This week’s game is the most important game in 96 games. It’s our shot, our chance to play in the post-season where Joe (Gibbs) knows best. But since we don’t want to jinx, lets just wait for the game to be played and then it will be time to strike up the band for the one great singing that we have practiced all year for. This is the year! I just know it! Hail to the Redskins! Hail Victory! Braves on the warpath! Fight for old D.C.! Run or pass and score-We want a lot more! Beat em’, swamp em’, touchdown!- Let the points soar! Fight on, fight on till you have won, sons of Wash-ing-ton. Rah! Rah! Rah! Hail to the Redskins! Hail Victory! Braves on the warpath! Fight for old D.C.!
See you next week for the most amazing thing ever written in Redskins history (At least by me)!
