Doctors have determined that Priest Holmes will now miss the rest of the season due to a concussion that he received in week 8 against San Diego. If you can recall, Priest injured his right knee in week 9 of the 2004 season and was placed on injured reserve for the rest of the year. I have a new name for this, it's called the Priest Holmes mid-season injury curse.
Now there are really two ways to look at this whole ordeal. You could say "Oh no, Priest is out, there goes our season," or you could say "Well, it's sad to hear about Priest but it's a good thing we have Larry Johnson to get us through this." It all depends on what kind of person you are and what you believe in.
I personally think that this will open the door even wider for Larry Johnson to come in and show that he should be the permanent starter for this team, come next year.
This also brings up the question of what to do with Holmes in the off season. He's old and getting older, and also becoming more and more injury prone. Plus with Johnson around, the Chiefs don't need two outstanding running backs. While that might be nice to have, pretty soon it's going to become a problem because they are both going to be expensive to keep around.
I say that Kansas City should trade Priest in the off season and try to get a wide receiver out of him. That's if Trent Green decides to stick around. If not then the Chiefs have got to go for a quarterback. Todd Collins, like it or not, is not going to be able to lead this team to the Super Bowl.
It will definitely be interesting to see how Larry Johnson handles the starting job for the rest of this season because I think that will be the deciding factor on what to do with Priest Holmes, but either way, Kansas City isn't going to have to worry about their running game for a while.
