The scoreboard is where games are officially won and lost, but they are largely decided by the team that wins the battles of yards per pass, yards per carry, penalty yards loss, first downs and turnovers. For this reason, I created the following formula called the Trench Counter to look at which team truly controls the game.

(2x Yards per pass)
+ (2x Yards per carry)
+ (.5 First downs)
- (Penalty yards/10)
- (2.5 Turnovers)
- (Opposing Team's Trench Counter)

AP Top 15 After Week 2

1. USC (23.6)

USC rested up and got to watch Ohio State struggle to a narrow win over Ohio in which the Buckeyes were trailing at halftime.

2. Georgia (16.0)

Knowshon Moreno is averaging 8.7 yards per carry, up from his very good 5.4 as a sophomore.

3. Oklahoma (23.1)

Ryan Broyles had a hugely impressive debut, catching seven balls for 141 yards and a touchdown.

4. Florida (22.3)

The Gators were up 9-3 until Percy Harvin scored from two yards out.

5. Ohio State (18.4)

If Ohio can average 4.7 yards per carry against their defense, stopping Joe McKnight will be a tall order on Saturday at the Coliseum.

6. Missouri (18.6)

Chase Daniel was near perfect, completing 16 of his 17 pass attempts for three touchdowns.

7. LSU (13.3)

Their game against Troy was postponed until November.

8. Texas (15.6)

Quan Cosby caught eight balls for 154 yards for the Longhorns against UTEP.

9. Auburn (9.1)

The Tigers held Southern Miss to just 1.4 yards per rush on Saturday.

10. Wisconsin (18.7)

The air attack was working for Allan Evridge against Marshall, throwing for 308 yards.

11. Alabama (7.5)

The Crimson Tide greatly outplayed Clemson in their first game, but they were outplayed themselves by Tulane on Saturday (-8 Trench Counter). Alabama was lifted by Javier Arenas' 87-yard TD on a punt return and Chris Rogers touchdown on a blocked punt. They managed just 172 yards compared to 318 for the Green Wave.

12. Texas Tech (-0.4)

Texas Tech was outplayed by Nevada and were saved by an Eric Morris 86-yard punt return and Michael Crabtree's 82-yard TD.

13. Kansas (19.0)

Todd Reesing was 32-for-38 for 412 yards against Louisiana Tech.

14. East Carolina (8.5)

East Carolina may be the biggest story in the early going of the 2008 season as they've now knocked off then No. 17 Virginia Tech and No. 8 West Virginia. The Pirates ate up West Virginia's secondary for 8.4 yards per pass.

15. Arizona State (11.9)

A 45-yard TD pass from Rudy Carpenter to Kerry Taylor with 29 seconds left in the second half to turn a 13-10 game into a 20-10 game.
