This one deviates from the typical mock drafts, in which I try to successfully predict what players will go in what slots. That has nothing to do with this exercise, where I put on the GM hat and make picks for my team based on the available board. Sometimes it looks pretty similar to the real draft, sometimes guys are rounds apart.

A little peek at my rationale...

--I am a strong proponent of bad teams adding impact talent at key spots, not necessarily the spots they need the most immediate help.

--I value QB, offensive and defensive tackles the highest (not any order) and TE, CB and RB lowest (again no order). Read that as: it?s hardest to find someone of great talent later in the draft at these spots, or easier to find some guy off the street who can perform reasonably well. I would never draft a punter or kicker before the 7th round and it would have to be someone exceptional to pull that trigger, and none of those are in this draft.

--Current playoff teams should always take the best player available at a position where they do not have a current player that will still be in that spot for at least two more years.

--Bonus picks in rounds (i.e. extra picks acquired via trade) are for taking risks, but not to be stupid about it.

--I tend to favor higher-floor, lower-ceiling guys in the 2nd and 3rd rounds...most of the time.

--Positional economics play a factor. As an example, I believe the Chiefs badly need a QB, but they have so much money tied up in Matt Cassel that drafting one high makes no sense.

--If I really like a guy for a team, all the above goes out the window. Call that my Al Davis factor.
