It took 1 hour, 56 minutes, and 14 seconds of playing time, but Santana Moss finally scored the Washington Redskins? first touchdown of the season late in the week 2 Monday Night Football game to pull within 6 points of their biggest rival, the Dallas Cowboys.
Fortunately for the Skins, their second touchdown of the season would come just 71 seconds later on a 70-yard go ahead bomb from Mark Brunell to Moss.
Just when I thought I was watching another classic game of ?Contendboys? and ?Pretendians?, Washington pulled one out in Big D for the first time in ten years.
That?s right, for all of you that decided to catch an extra 20 minute snooze for your Tuesday morning commute; you missed more Monday Night Madness.
Washington 14, Dallas 13.
I will forgive you this time. Heck, I think I may have been accidentally sneaking in some catnaps most of this one. Other than the Cowboys 70 yard flea flicker to Terry Glenn early in the third quarter, every minute in this game was an absolute bore until the final four. Having nothing interesting to write about, I almost resorted to praising the Boys? slick looking unis.
Nonetheless, the Redskins somehow found a way to spoil a night when the beloved ?Triplets?, Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, and Emmitt Smith would have their numbers retired in Irving.
And from the looks of the Skins? post-game reaction, I thought they had spoiled the Boys? chance to go to Super Bowl XL.
Players were jumping into each other?s arms?
Joe Gibbs was doused in a Gatorade bath?
Dan Snyder almost knocked out his suite mates?
Another great Monday Night finish has taught us once again?
It aint over till the Redskins act like they just won the NFC Championship.
Monday Night?s ?Men Amongst Boys?: Santana Moss and Mark Brunell. Believe it or not, Moss is the one who suggested the two touchdown scoring plays to his coach. His final stat line: 5 receptions, 159 yards, 2 TDs (the only two his team has scored the entire season). I slip Brunell in this week, because despite having a mediocre 56 minutes, the two touchdown throws were absolutely on the money, and it doesn?t get any more clutch than the situation he was facing.
Monday Night?s Mundane: Clinton Portis. If the Redskins had lost this game, I would have blamed it on Portis. Winners normally do not get this title, but Portis did not help his team win in any form of the word. 52 yards on 17 carries will not get it done for a featured back, and in a haphazard offense like this one, they need the running game to establish the play-action to Moss.
