The 49ers dropped out of the top-five due to a loss to the Ravens in which they had a -16.4 Trench Counter rating, but they should fatten up on the TC and still secure a first round bye with four out of their five remaining games against NFC West foes.

Their one opponent with a winning record is Pittsburgh, who have settled back in with two road wins since the touch Sunday night to Baltimore.

While the Texans are atop the rankings, they had a -9.3 against the Jaguars and are on their third quarterback in three games. The Titans, meanwhile, remain within striking distance, yet are ranked 26th here.

The Trench Counter formula, which the below rankings are solely based upon, creates a completely objective examination. The formula accounts for yards per carry, yards per pass, first downs, turnovers and penalties. It attempts to identify which team controls the line of scrimmage, controls the trenches.

The true intention of this type of ranking system is to identify teams that may be over or underrated.
