We have created a year-end team portfolio ranking for the NFL. The exercise is to evaluate every team as if they were a portfolio of assets to determine which is most valuable.

The only considerations are talent, age, cap flexibility and contract situations with the goal being to eventually compete for and win the Super Bowl. An older team already contending is more valued than a younger team with a ton of talent that may not get there, but the younger team with upside is a better bet than an older team that’s currently better but without the upside.

I’m putting the emphasis on the age of the key players as a kind of mental tiebreaker. As an example, Tom Brady is awesome now but in 2-3 years he won’t be (right?), whereas Cam Newton isn’t at that level now but figures to pass him sooner than later. Another example would be putting Jake Matthews above Joe Thomas at left tackle even though Thomas (31) is obviously better now than Matthews (23).

The NFL has a quickly changing landscape, but this creation of a hierarchal ranking gives a look to how we would choose their collective situations at the end of 2015.

32. Miami Dolphins: Cap woes, best players on D are all over 30, thanks to atrocious ownership.

31. Cleveland Browns: Going nowhere for as long as their quarterback situation remains a mess. Yet another high pick will arrive this spring.

30. San Diego Chargers: Philip Rivers’ age, relocation, no playmakers on defense all hurt.

29. Buffalo Bills: The Bills are an older team with a bad cap situation, meaning they’ll lose quality guys like C. Glenn and M. Williams. The rookie season of Ronald Darby and the surprisingly solid play of Tyrod Taylor at quarterback were the biggest positives of an otherwise disappointing first season for Rex Ryan.

28. Dallas Cowboys: Tony Romo’s age is a big factor here as are cap issues that mitigate their strong line and the greatness of Dez Bryant.

27. New Orleans Saints: A long rebuild ahead whenever Drew Brees leaves and the defense is awful.

26. San Francisco 49ers: Worst team on field this year but they have cap room and figure to get some guys back. They can’t be higher than this unless Tomsula/Baalke are both fired.

25. Baltimore Ravens: Window closed, no key players in peak years.

24. Indianapolis Colts: Outside of Andrew Luck there is nothing to like here. Nothing. There is really no reason why a team with a 26-year-old Andrew Luck should be this bad.

23. Tennessee Titans: Marcus Mariota has shown flashes and they get another top pick this year.

22. Jacksonville Jaguars: Young passing attack, cap room are plusses.

21. New York Giants: So many holes, but there is cap room and solid young talent in places too.

20. Atlanta Falcons: Lose the cap tie and playmaker age battle to TB. Julio Jones continues his excellence but Matt Ryan has regressed. Vic Beasley could have a breakout second season in 2016.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The foundation is there in Jameis Winston and the rest of a strong 2015 draft class.

18. New York Jets: Leonard Williams has given the Jets another young talent on defense and the offense has been cobbled together better than expected. They've been on the mediocrity treadmill for quite some time.

17. Minnesota Vikings: Better than Detroit this year, but their defense is aging and Adrian Peterson is nearing the end.

16. Detroit Lions: Seriously. Their cap woes clear and the young talent is emerging already.

15. St. Louis Rams: The Rams have loads of cap room and are incredibly young. Beyond Gurley, Donald and the defensive line, the rest of team is abysmal.

14. Washington: The cap hit with a potential franchise tag on Kirk Cousins hurts.

13. Chicago Bears: The Bears have the second youngest roster and second most cap room though they will likely lose Forte.

12. Philadelphia Eagles: Fletcher Cox and Malcolm Jenkins anchor a better than advertised defense. The talent drain on offense has made the Chip Kelly experiment fail.

11. Houston Texans: Get them a QB and RB to become contenders as the young core is strong otherwise. J.J. Watt turns 27 in the offseason.

10. Pittsburgh Steelers: Denver ahead of them based on cap room and age on offense. Le'Veon Bell has been unable to stay healthy and the defense needs substantial improvement.

9. Denver Broncos: The Broncos have the best defense in the NFL, anchored by twentysomethings Von Miller, Brandon Marshall and Chris Harris Jr.

8. Green Bay Packers: Aaron Rodgers has been more human than normal this season and just turned 32. The Packers always build from within and remain relatively young.

7. Oakland Raiders: Love the young core of Carr, Mack, G. Jackson, Cooper, and they have loads of cap room

6. Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs went on a great run after losing Jamaal Charles with Alex Smith once again finding his form. Their defense should remain very good for a long time with Justin Houston, Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson and Eric Berry. Even Eric Fisher has begun to escape his bust label.

5. New England Patriots: Super Bowl contenders for as long as Tom Brady is remotely close to this good.

4. Arizona Cardinals: Carson Palmer and Larry Fitzgerald are in win-now mode but the defense will remain excellent for a long time to come.

3. Cincinnati Bengals: Andy Dalton showed real improvement before his injury to go with A.J. Green, Tyler Eifert and their running backs. The Bengals’ defense gives them tremendous balance.

2. Seattle Seahawks: Russell Wilson and the defense answered some real questions after a slow start to the season. They have proven capable of continuing to win at a high level despite their young core now being paid properly. It is been more about their front seven this season, particularly Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril and K.J. Wright, than the Legion of Boom.

1. Carolina Panthers: Despite some age on defense, Luke Kuechly, Josh Norman, Kawann Short and Kurt Coleman make up a great young core. Get the finally appreciated and fully realized Cam Newton a wide receiver of Kelvin Benjamin's caliber back and the offense could be even better. There is potential to add more depth despite being 22nd in cap room in 2016 since they only have to pay Norman of the key pieces.
