Former Lineman Blames Washington Front Office For Media Leaks

Sep 24, 2016 3:42 PM

A former offensive lineman with Washington says the front office is to blame for a majority of leaks to the media.

This week it was reported that multiple offensive players were grumbling about Kirk Cousins.

Tyler Polumbus said on his podcast that there's a culture of leaking information to the media in Washington.

"You know what the problem is? The front office out there doesn’t set the standard," Polumbus said. "I honestly feel like 70 percent of the leaks come from the front office out there. So then a guy comes out and starts complaining behind the scenes [that] a player does it and it's like, 'Well, what are you gonna do? Because we all know that half the leaks are coming from the front office, so maybe you guys can shut your mouth up there and we'll shut our mouth down here.'"

Polumbus, 31, played for Washington from 2011 to 2014.

Gruden Disputes Notion He's Treating Cousins Differently Than Griffin

Sep 22, 2016 2:44 PM

Jay Gruden disputes the notion he's treated Kirk Cousins differently than he did in the past with Robert Griffin III.

Gruden was heavily critical of Griffin in a memorable November 2014 press conference.

Cousins has struggled to begin the 2016 season.

“There was the one issue; that was it,” Gruden told Albert Breer of his criticism of Griffin, referring to the press conference in which he said Griffin’s performance against Tampa Bay was “not even close to good enough” to what the team expected. “Some people acted like I constantly trashed him. I don’t think I’m treating anyone differently. I learned a lot from that one press conference, and I took responsibility for it. Should’ve kept it in-house. But I’m never trying to put a lot of blame on one person. If things aren’t right, it’s usually because of more than that. And right now, we have a lot to clean up.”

Norman To Shadow Beckham As Washington Wants Him To Earn His $75M

Sep 21, 2016 4:17 PM

Josh Norman will shadow Odell Beckham Jr. in their Week 3 matchup.

Norman will go "anywhere Odell goes ... except for slot," the source said.

Washington's coaching staff wanted to make the decision sooner, but it didn't want to upset Redskins cornerback Bashaud Breeland.

"We're going to let him earn the $75 million," the source said, referring to the five-year, $75 million contract Norman signed during the offseason.

In their matchup in Week 14 of last season, a frustrated Beckham was flagged three times for unnecessary roughness for tussles with Norman, ultimately earning a one-game suspension. Norman also was given an unnecessary roughness penalty in the game. Beckham finished with six receptions for 76 yards and one touchdown.

Jay Gruden Has 'Total Faith' In Kirk Cousins

Sep 19, 2016 7:05 PM

Jay Gruden voiced his support for Kirk Cousins after another Washington loss in which he was hardly as effective as he was in 2015.

In two games, Cousins has thrown for 693 yards, but he has just one touchdown and three interceptions, playing a crucial role in Washington's 0-2 start.

"We have total faith that Kirk will get it done, and he will get it done," Jay Gruden said. "He has proven that he can be a successful quarterback in this league."

Washington's defense has allowed 65 points in two games, but the heavy focus is on Cousins' play.

"He's a great competitor without a doubt," Gruden said. "At quarterback, sometimes if you don't get victories, you feel like -- everybody feels like -- it's the quarterback's fault. Everybody's writing headlines on the quarterback. But there are a lot of issues that we have to correct. He's part of it, I'm part of it, the coordinators are part of it, then the rest of the players are part of it. It all fits in the equation."

Cousins is playing under the $19.95 million franchise tag after he and Washington failed to agree upon a long-term deal.

Josh Norman Upset With Drug Test After Loss

Sep 19, 2016 8:25 AM

Upset after Sunday's 27-23 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Josh Norman wasn't happy that he also had to take a drug test.

While speaking with the media, Norman complained about a test that had to be completed shortly thereafter.

"How the NFL has us drug tested right after the game, I don't understand that. I really don't," Norman said. "It's crazy. Don't have anything left in the tank and they want you drug tested? I don't understand it."

The NFL conducts random drug tests year-round, and every player will be tested at least once. Norman said this is the first time the NFL has conducted tests after the game.

"I don't get it, I really don't," Norman said. "What's a day gonna do? It's stupid."

The NFL's drug testing policy states that "specimen collections occurring at a club facility, stadium or scouting combine venue will be conducted at the discretion of the Medical Advisor and Collection Vendor without advance notice to the player."

Victor Cruz On Josh Norman: If You're The Best, Cover The Best WRs

Sep 15, 2016 8:27 AM

Victor Cruz took a jab at Josh Norman on Wednesday for not covering Antonio Brown on Monday night.

Brown had eight receptions for 126 yards and two touchdowns as the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Washington Redskins 38-16.

"Especially if he calls himself -- I don't call him this, he calls himself the best corner in the league -- then you have to go cover the best receivers on the other team," Cruz said. "Going in, I thought he was going to follow AB all over the place, but he didn't. So it is what it is. He made his choice."

Norman told reporters Wednesday that he focuses on the assignments given to him by his coaches.

"I'm doing what I'm asked to do and doing it to the best of my abilities, trying to be a cerebral assassin on details and assignments, which my coaches ask me to do," he said. "Trying to be a technician of the game. Anything I can do, I'm all for it. Whether I travel or not travel to one side, left side, who really cares? Just get the job done. Whoever gets the job done, so be it.

"All this talk about this guy matchups up this guy, who really frickin' cares? Come out with a W and win the game. That's hogwash. That's what people talk about. Of course we want to go up against each other because our competitive egos are through the roof. It's one of those things that comes with the territory."

Alfred Morris Found Free Agency 'Very Insulting'

Sep 16, 2016 9:09 AM

Alfred Morris, who ended up signing with the Dallas Cowboys, found free agency to be "very insulting."

"The free-agency process was very insulting, to just say the least," Morris said. "I didn't like it one bit. I don't want to do it again."

Morris left the Washington Redskins to sign with a division rival.

"By the end of the year, I figured my time there was gone," said Morris, a sixth-round pick by then-coach Mike Shanahan in 2012. "You're not the coach's guy, you're not the GM's guy, they draft a young guy. It's a business, so I expected that. They just had a different plan and I wasn't a part of it and that was OK.

"I can't cry over spilled milk. I just had to go buy me another gallon."

Antonio Brown: Josh Norman Wanted To Cover Me One-On-One

Sep 14, 2016 10:47 AM

Antonio Brown had 126 yards and two touchdowns against the Washington Redskins on Monday night with Josh Norman primarily lined up against other receivers.

Both of Brown's touchdowns came against Bashaud Breeland, beating the third-year corner down the sideline for scores of 29 and 26 yards.

"I'm sure he wanted to play me, but I don't know if it was his coach's scheme or what they thought," Brown said. "I know he wanted to play against me one-on-one the whole game if it was up to him."

Brown said he considers Norman a "good friend," and the two exchanged jerseys after the game.

Jay Gruden Defends Putting Bashaud Breeland On Antonio Brown

Sep 13, 2016 6:58 AM

Jay Gruden opted to put Bashaud Breeland, and not Josh Norman, on Antonio Brown during Monday night's Pittsburgh Steelers-Washington Redskins game.

The Monday Night Football matchup was billed in part as a matchup between a star cornerback (Norman) and star receiver (Brown). Breeland was the primary defender on Brown, who caught eight passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns in Pittsburgh's 38-16 victory.

"He's a good corner and he got beat by a great player today, and some great passes that I don't know what corner could defend," Gruden said of Breeland.

Going forward the Redskins will look at the possibility of having Norman shadow the opposing team's No. 1 receiver.
