Vernon Davis Signs With Washington

Mar 31, 2016 4:44 PM

Vernon Davis has agreed to a one-year deal with Washington.

In 10 seasons, Davis has caught 461 passes. Davis finished last season with 38 receptions for 395 yards with the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos.

Washington particularly likes the blocking ability of Davis.

Scot McCloughan drafted Davis while with the 49ers.

"He's in great shape. He's a football player and is one of those guys that has never really been injured because his genetics is so incredible," McCloughan said during the NFL owners meetings on March 22. "He can block, he can run, he catches."

Washington 'Gambling' On Matt Jones As No. 1 Running Back

Mar 27, 2016 5:30 PM

Washington is prepared to have Matt Jones carry most of the load at running back.

Alfred Morris signed with the Dallas Cowboys this offseason.

"Matt played well and we're very excited about him," Gruden said, via CSN Mid-Atlantic. "We let a heck of a running back, and a very productive running back, go because we have Matt."

During his rookie campaign Jones displayed power between the tackles, speed to get to the edge, burst at the second level and size to break tackles. However, the 6-foot-1, 231-pound back proved inconsistent as a rookie. He missed holes, was stuffed often in the backfield -- leading to a 3.4 yards per carry average -- and he had a fumbling problem.

"We need him to protect the ball a little bit more," Gruden said. "He's a big, strong, powerful back that I think can handle the workload; time will tell on that. We're taking a bit of a gamble here, but based on our professional opinion, we believe he can handle it and be very, very effective at it, toting the rock."

Gruden left zero doubt Jones will assume the No. 1 role.

"That's what we envision, yes. He's got the size. I mean, he's got the measurables, that's for sure. That doesn't always translate, so we'll see. We like Matt. We think he's a smart football player and he runs very, very hard. Now we just have to make sure the ball security is there (because) he can catch the ball out the backfield. He's a very good solid football player that we have high hopes for."

Robert Griffin III Signs Two-Year Deal With Browns

Mar 25, 2016 11:31 AM

The Cleveland Browns and Robert Griffin III have agreed upon a two year deal. The Browns have been the only franchise to show serious interest in Griffin.

Griffin is a free agent after he was released by Washington.

Griffin was the 2012 Offensive Rookie of the Year and has since struggled with injuries. Griffin led Washington to win the NFC East while throwing for 3,200 yards with 20 touchdowns against five interceptions along with 815 yards rushing and seven touchdowns.

Griffin didn't play at all in 2015 as Jay Gruden went with Kirk Cousins as his starter.

Washington Releases Robert Griffin III

Mar 8, 2016 11:28 AM

Robert Griffin III has been released by Washington.

Griffin had lost the starting job in August and served as Washington's No. 3 quarterback all season. He was active for one game.

Washington had hoped to trade Griffin.

Washington traded up in the 2012 draft, giving up two first-round picks and a second and swapping first-rounders with St. Louis.

At one point, then-coach Mike Shanahan told reporters, "I don't think anybody in the history of the league has played at his level. At least over the last 40 years, when I take a look at the numbers and what he has done, I don't think anybody has played at his level. As we've talked about before, he's got a unique skill set -- his ability to throw, drop back, play action, put a threat on a defense with his running ability -- and he will just get better and better. He's just scratching the surface. And the reason I say that is because he works at it."

Kirk Cousins Accepts Franchise Tender From Washington

Mar 2, 2016 10:45 PM

Kirk Cousins has accepted Washington's franchise tender, which means he'll forfeit the right to negotiate with any other team.

The non-exclusive tag will pay Cousins $19.95 million, giving him the highest base salary of any quarterback in the league for the 2016 season.

Cousins won't miss any offseason work as a protest against the franchise tag.
