Washington Looking To Move Down From No. 5

Apr 30, 2015 11:51 AM

Washington is open to trading down from the No. 5 slot in the NFL Draft as Scot McCloughan rebuilds the roster.

"There's no question that the Redskins would like to trade down. The question is whether or not they're going to get value in doing that," Albert Breer said. "They have seven picks right now over the next three days. Scot McCloughan said himself on Monday that he'd like to get that number closer to 10. The problem is the way this draft shakes out, you don't want to drop out of the top 15. They're limited to as how far they'd be willing to drop down and they'd still like to fortify those lines of scrimmage."

When McCloughan was with the San Francisco 49ers, the team selected three offensive linemen, a defensive lineman, a linebacker and a tight end in the first round.

Washington has picked up their fifth-year option on the contract of Robert Griffin III, keeping him under team control through 2016.

In that 2012 season, Griffin III earned his first-career Pro Bowl selection, while also establishing NFL rookie records for passer rating (102.4), percentage of passes intercepted (1.27) and rushing yards by a quarterback (815).

Griffin has been inconsistent since undergoing surgery on a torn ACL.

Griffin was named starting quarterback for the 2015 season back in February.

Washington has acquired Dashon Goldson from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a sixth round pick in 2016.

Goldson, who began his career with the San Francisco 49ers, was signed to a five-year, $41 million contract in 2013.

A source told ESPN that the Buccaneers will save $4 million in salary-cap space with this trade, but are still responsible for the other $4 million, which was guaranteed.
