McCloughan: Washington Has Strong Talent Base Already

Jan 10, 2015 12:16 AM

Scot McCloughan believes he's working with a better base of talent with Washington than he inherited with the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers didn’t go to the playoffs while McCloughan was G.M. there, but he acquired 13 of the 22 starters when they made the NFC Championship Game.

During his five years in charge of the 49ers, he acquired players such as Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Patrick Willis, Joe Staley, Justin Smith, Ahmad Brooks and Dashon Goldson.

“Coming in here, this roster from what I know about right now, is much more improved than the 49ers,” McCloughan said, via Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. “Also, we went through five coordinators in five years on the offensive side with a young quarterback. Things weren’t meshing.

“But you could see each year we were adding good football players. And you could see in the offseason how hard they worked, and how important it was to them to be a family and grow together. Then, all of a sudden, they hit the peak. Coach [Jim] Harbaugh came in there and they took off.”

A.J. Smith will be offered an enhanced position within the front office of Washington.

Smith currently is working as a senior executive for Washington.

Smith's name has popped up in a couple other jobs. According to multiple sources, Smith would have been Jon Gruden's general manager had he accepted owner Mark Davis' offer to be the Oakland Raiders' coach. Gruden turned down the Raiders last month and instead signed an extension with ESPN.
