Gruden Doesn't Expect Many Read-Option Plays For Griffin

Oct 8, 2014 8:30 AM

Jay Gruden doesn't plan on using the read-option with much frequency for Robert Griffin III in the Washington Redskins' offense.

Gruden has acknowledged the quarterback’s capabilities and the success that the Redskins have had in the past running those schemes. But he has stressed the importance of developing a well-rounded attack tailored to the strengths of Griffin and his teammates.

“We’ll have sprinkles here and there,” Gruden said. “It’s not going to be a major part. I want to make sure that we have other things that we can do besides the read option, because it takes a toll. You have to practice it a lot to be very good at it. It kind of takes away from the defense’s ability a little bit, it takes away from other plays that you need to work on, your protection schemes, your running game, all that stuff. It just takes away from that. So we want to make sure that we work on the core running game that we have, the core drop-back passes we have. And then once we get going, we get those implemented, maybe sprinkle in some read option.”

Lurie: Eagles Released DeSeason Jackson As 'Football Decision'

Sep 25, 2014 7:15 AM

Chip Kelly has received the support of Philadelphia Eagles' owner Jeffrey Lurie in the decision to release DeSean Jackson.

The Eagles have denied the decision as being anything more than a "football decision."

"It was really a football decision," Lurie told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Chip and his people were incredibly clear that for us to get better we need to take a step back and reconfigure the wide receiver position. I think common to a lot of really smart coaches, he knows exactly what he wants at every position. And for Chip on offense, it just wasn't a good fit. It just was not a good fit with what he asks wide receivers to do."

Griffin Working On Rehabbing Knee, Building Bond With Teammates

Dec 2, 2014 7:42 PM

Robert Griffin III is working on strengthening his right knee as well as increasing his bond with teammates.

“That building a trust, building a bond, those memories you create help you on game day,” he said. “People underestimate that bond. I didn’t have as much bonding time last year. I didn’t have the offseason I had to do all the things I’m going to be doing this year. But that’s not an excuse for what happened last year. I’m grateful I got the chance to go through the offseason this year. Building those bonds and trust with teammates, that matters on game day.”

DeSean Jackson Owes Over $500k To Rosenhaus

Oct 30, 2014 4:35 AM

DeSean Jackson owes former agent Drew Rosenhaus $516,415 in unpaid loans and fees.

Yahoo! Sports reported Rosenhaus originally sought $777,793 for "loans, interest, credit card charges and insurance premiums." Rosenhaus filed the grievance in June 2013, shortly after he was fired by Jackson, according to reports.

After leaving Rosenhaus, Jackson signed with Joel Segal, who negotiated the receiver's three-year, $24 million contract ($16 million guaranteed) with the Washington Redskins.

Gruden Wanted Redskins To Act Quickly In Signing DeSean Jackson

Oct 30, 2014 12:04 PM

Jay Gruden wanted the Washington Redskins to act quickly when DeSean Jackson was released by the Philadelphia Eagles.

“He got released by Philadelphia, and as soon as that happened, it was, ‘Wow,’ for us,” Gruden said on SiriusXM NFL Radio, via CSNWashington.com. “Because obviously people around here have played against him a couple of times a year. Guys like that don’t come around very often and when they do, you have to do your due diligence, and you have to do whatever it takes to get the guy if you think he’s a fit. And we felt like he was a fit for us. So Bruce Allen [was] all systems go and made a play for him and [it] ended up working out to get him.”

The Redskins were Jackson's first and only free agent visit.

Report: Eagles' Teammates Didn't Like Jackson

Oct 25, 2014 3:19 PM

DeSean Jackson was not very well liked by his teammates with the Philadelphia Eagles and was blatantly insubordinate, according to sources.

Jackson cussed out Chip Kelly several times in front of the team.

Several other sources also suggested that Jeremy Maclin may have had an issue if Jackson returned to the Eagles in 2014.

“The fact is, [Jackson] was a ‘me-guy’ with an attitude problem and [Maclin] is the complete opposite, a team guy, a great character guy you go to war with,” said one source. “Funny how [Jackson] has this anti-bully thing and he thought he could push [Kelly] around; he found out otherwise. His being cut had nothing to do with the gang stuff. The team knew it. Everyone knew he had ‘ties.’ Those were his guys. That’s okay. What put him out was his selfishness. He can try and spin it all he wants how he’s ‘a team player.’ He’s not. I’ll put it this way, when it came out last Friday that [Jackson] was released, more than a few guys were happy it happened. They said ‘good riddance.’ He had no real connection with anyone."

Jackson met with the Redskins at their facility on Tuesday and his agent remained to discuss contract numbers.

"Very exciting player. Determined to show he is the best and hungry to win. My kinda guy," Robert Griffin told ESPN's Britt McHenry.
