Peterson Interested In Giants, Texans, Bucs If He Leaves Vikings

Jan 20, 2017 8:14 AM

Adrian Peterson would like to remain with the Minnesota Vikings but he openly talked about other teams he would consider in free agency, such as the New York Giants, Houston Texans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers .

"I see myself in purple. A lot has to take place," Peterson said on First Take on Thursday. "I see myself finishing off in purple. It is a business at the end of the day, so with that, things could end up differently. ... Hopefully we can work things out."

"There's a couple teams out there that I've thought about. ... New York was one of them that popped up, Tampa Bay, lot of different teams. Houston would be a good spot," Peterson said. "I'll stop right there. ... I'm just throwing random names out there."

The Vikings have a team option on Peterson for 2017 that includes an $11.75 million base salary and $6 million roster bonus. They have to decide on Peterson's 2017 option by the start of the league year and would owe him the $6 million roster bonus if he was on the team by the third day of the league year.

Buccaneers Agree To Extension With DC Mike Smith

Jan 13, 2017 8:23 AM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed to a contract extension with defensive coordinator Mike Smith, according to a source.

Smith flirted with some of the head coaching vacancies this month.

After allowing 26.1 points per game (26th in the league) in 2015, that number dropped to 23.1, the 15th-best mark. During the Tampa Bay's five-game winning streak in the middle of the season, the defense allowed a minuscule 64 points.

Eight Teams Can Be Forced To Appear On Hard Knocks In 2017

Jan 4, 2017 8:45 AM

If no teams volunteers, there are eight teams that the NFL can force to appear on HBO's Hard Knocks this year.

Those teams are the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints.

A team can be forced to appear on Hard Knocks if three conditions are met: a) it hasn't appeared on Hard Knocks in the last 10 years, b) it hasn't made the playoffs in the last two years, and c) it doesn't have a new head coach.

No Teams Finish 2016 In Top-10 In Both Offensive, Defensive DVOA

Jan 3, 2017 2:01 PM

The NFL has very few teams this season that excel in all facets of the game. Further evidence of this issue shows itself in the fact that there is only one team ranking in the top-10 in both Football Outsiders' Offensive and Defensive DVOA.

Last season, the Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs ranked in the top-10 on both sides of the ball.

The Chiefs were the closest team to finish in the top-10 in both Offensive and Defensive DVOA at 13th and 14th.

The New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys finished the season ranked first and second in both Total DVOA and Weighted DVOA.

Buccaneers Will Make Roberto Aguayo Compete For Job

Jan 3, 2017 7:38 AM

Roberto Aguayo, who the Tampa Bay Buccaneers used a second-round pick on in 2016, will have to compete for his job next summer.

Tampa Bay traded up for the pick that was used on the kicker.

"As far as the investment in Roberto and where we picked him, we were all on board with that," Dirk Koetter said. "That's not going to change. We're never going to bring that back. That happened, and Roberto was our kicker and like any other player, if he's got that Buc jersey on and he's out there on game day, I'm 100 percent in. With that said, our field-goal percentage this year was not good enough. That's not the only stat that's not good enough."

Aguayo's field goal rate of 71 percent was the worst in the NFL among kickers who lasted the whole season.

"I think it's already proven that we have no problem moving on from a draft choice and playing somebody that wasn't drafted," Koetter said. "We've got to have competition at every position. Nothing's a given. If they're not the best player, then I feel pretty certain in saying they won't be out there."
