Kirk Cousins Would Only Accept Trade To 49ers

Feb 28, 2017 11:28 AM

If Washington decides to trade Kirk Cousins, he would only accept a move to the San Francisco 49ers.

Wednesday is the deadline for the Redskins to decide whether to place their franchise tag on the quarterback.

Former Washington offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is the new head coach of the 49ers.

Cousins can't outright block a trade to any team, but given the fact that he isn't signed long-term he could keep a club from acquiring by refusing to commit long-term.

Colin Kaepernick Meets With Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch

Feb 24, 2017 3:00 PM

The San Francisco 49ers hosted Colin Kaepernick for a meeting on Wednesday.

“I would characterize it as just a really positive discussion,” John Lynch said during an appearance on KNBR, confirming a report the sides met for the first time since Lynch and Kyle Shanahan were hired in their new roles.

Lynch said he and Shanahan have committed to being completely honest with Kaepernick, who can opt out of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent as early as next week.

“I do think that there are some things that are sacred,” Lynch said. “We did have a great discussion and I think Colin left excited and we left excited.

“And I think as Kyle and I believe, the evaluation process is still very much fluid. We’ve only been on the job a couple of weeks and I can tell you we both very much enjoyed being around Colin, and he seems like he’s a real good place.”

Kyle Shanahan: 49ers Will Be Patient At Quarterback

Feb 21, 2017 4:44 PM

Kyle Shanahan says the San Francisco 49ers will be patient in their search for a franchise quarterback.

Shanahan has been linked to Kirk Cousins, who he coached with the Washington Redskins.

"You're not trying to commit everything to one year," Shanahan told KNBR-AM in San Francisco. "Yes, you want to win right away. That's the goal of everybody. But you don't want to do that at the expense of hurting your future.

"You don't want to gamble. You want to be aggressive in everything, but you got to do what's right. You have to build your team the right way and that's what I mean by being patient."

Kyle Shanahan May Bring Jacob Tamme To San Francisco

Feb 20, 2017 7:46 AM

After catching 22 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns with the Atlanta Falcons, Jacob Tamme is a free agent.

There is a strong possibility Tamme will follow Kyle Shanahan to the San Francisco 49ers.

"I love being a Falcon, love my teammates, love what we have going on here in this organization," Tamme said. "I'm interested to see what the future holds."

Louis Riddick Was 'Very, Very Close' To Taking 49ers GM Job

Feb 17, 2017 3:31 PM

Louis Riddick told ESPN Radio that he was close to becoming the next general manager of the San Francisco 49ers.

Riddick said he was "very, very, very, very, very, very, very close" to taking the job, but ultimately he and New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels were a "package deal."

"It was either going to be him and I, or it wasn't," Riddick said of a pairing of McDaniels and Riddick in San Francisco. "Josh, for his personal reasons, decided that now wasn't a good time. When he decided that -- which I was on board with that, obviously -- therefore I wasn't in the running anymore."

Myles Garrett Will Skip NFL Draft Ceremony

Feb 10, 2017 1:26 PM

Myles Garrett plans to skip the 2017 NFL Draft ceremony, instead watching at his home in Arlington, Texas.

Garrett is widely expected to be the top pick in the draft.

Last year, 25 prospects attended the draft.

Two years ago, the No. 1 pick of the 2015 draft, Jameis Winston, opted out of the chance to attend the draft in person because his grandmother was unable to travel for health reasons while Marcus Mariota also stayed home.

Kyle Shanahan To Control 49ers' 53-Man Roster, John Lynch Will Draft

Feb 10, 2017 8:18 AM

Perhaps learning from past mistakes, the San Francisco 49ers are attempting to avoid conflict between new hires Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch.

Shanahan will have control of the active, 53-man roster. Meanwhile, Lynch will have control of the full 90-man roster, and free agency and the draft. However, decisions will come with a requirement of the approval of the other.

"Free agency and draft, I think I have, but in all of those it's also written that subject to approval of the other guy," Lynch said. "That's the way we wanted it, that's the way we wanted it reflected, but that's the reality of it."

Kyle Shanahan Will Watch Film On Colin Kaepernick Before Decision

Feb 10, 2017 8:44 PM

Kyle Shanahan promises to watch all the film on Colin Kaepernick before determining whether he decides if there’s a fit for the San Francisco 49ers' offense.

“I see a lot better than I hear,” Shanahan said on Thursday. “I have to go watch it on tape. Colin, just like any other player, is someone I’m going to be watching a lot of tape on over these next few weeks.

“Before we look at anything -- free agency, the draft, anything -- you have to know what the players on your team are. And that doesn’t happen from just turning on a game. That happens from watching a lot of stuff. It takes a lot of time.”

John Lynch said Kaepernick reached out to him and the men spoke. He plans to meet with Kaepernick face-to-face in the near future.

“It will be a football decision,” Lynch said, “but I think part of that, there are different layers to that. I think everything will be included in the decision. I’m not talking specifically about his stance, though. When you have a quarterback, the great ones are leaders of men. All those things will be taken into account.

“I’m looking forward to sitting down with him. I really am. Colin and I, when I did some 49ers games, I’d say we hit it off. I’d say there was a trust there. I think that trust extends, and I was thrilled when he reached out. I’m looking forward to talking with him.”

Kyle Shanahan Won't Hire Offensive Coordinator For 49ers

Feb 8, 2017 12:26 PM

Kyle Shanahan will not hire an offensive coordinator as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers plan to hire Falcons offensive assistant Mike McDaniel as their “run-game guru” and Rich Scangarello as their quarterbacks coach.

The Cleveland Browns also are without an offensive coordinator as Hue Jackson serves as both head coach and playcaller.
