Zach Mettenberger To Be Released By Chargers

Aug 30, 2016 12:40 PM

Zach Mettenberger will be released by the San Diego Chargers.

Mettenberger had been outplayed by Mike Bercovici who is an undrafted rookie.

The Chargers claimed Mettenberger off waivers after the Tennessee Titans released him in May. Mettenberger had a relationship with Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt from his time serving as head coach of the Titans.

James Jones Released By Chargers

Aug 29, 2016 10:11 PM

James Jones has been released by the San Diego Chargers.

Jones never seemed to become comfortable in the Chargers' offense.

Back in March, the Packers informed Jones that they would rather go forward with ascending receivers such as Davante Adams, Ty Montgomery, Jared Abbrederis and Jeff Janis.

Jones will likely be picked up by a team that loses some of their depth at wide receiver later in the season.

Joey Bosa, Chargers Finally Agree Upon Four-Year Deal

Aug 30, 2016 8:11 AM

The San Diego Chargers and Joey Bosa have finally agreed upon a four-year deal.

The announcement late Monday morning came five days after the two sides went public in their nasty spat over payment of Bosa's $17 million signing bonus and whether the contract would have offset language.

Bosa was the third overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft and has been expected to play a key role in the Chargers' defense.

Antonio Gates: Chargers Will Welcome Joey Bosa Back 'With Open Arms'

Aug 26, 2016 3:41 PM

The San Diego Chargers and Joey Bosa remain engaged in a contract standoff, but that doesn't mean the rookie's teammates don't want to see him on the field.

Antonio Gates told reporters Thursday that Bosa would be "welcomed with open arms" by Chargers players if and when he signs his rookie deal. Gates made it clear that "Bolts support each other."

The tight end was involved in a contract dispute in 2005 that resulted in him receiving a team-ordered suspension.

Chargers Pull 'Best Offer' To Joey Bosa

Aug 26, 2016 9:01 AM

The San Diego Chargers announced Wednesday they had pulled their offer to unsigned first-round draft choice Joey Bosa after he rejected their "best offer."

The Chargers said in a statement they presented Bosa with an offer on Tuesday night that included:

- an initial signing bonus payment that is larger than any rookie has received in the last two NFL drafts,

- more money in 2016 than every rookie in this year's class except the Philadelphia Eagles' Carson Wentz,

- and the "largest payment and the highest percentage of signing bonus received in the first calendar" of any Chargers first-round pick since the adoption of the NFL's collective bargaining agreement in 2011.

The Chargers said Bosa rejected the offer on Wednesday.

Bosa's camp responded with the following statement:

"It is unfortunate the San Diego Chargers have decided to manipulate facts and negotiate in the media. The team surely is not strengthening its relationship with Joey Bosa by taking this stance and making their position public.

"We have decided that we will not engage in public negotiations or discuss numbers and/or terms in this negotiation.

"We will say, that it is ironic that the team now takes issue with the timing of Joey’s arrival, since the Chargers unilaterally decided to remain silent for the first 14 days of training camp instead of replying in a timely fashion to the proposal we made on the eve of training camp on July 28th.

"At this point, all we can do is continue to fight for a fair contract on behalf of our client, as we do for all of our clients. The Chargers can focus on trying to sway public opinion, but our focus will remain on our client and securing a contract for him that is fair and consistent with his draft position."

Chargers, Joey Bosa Have Reportedly Talked This Week

Aug 20, 2016 3:41 PM

The San Diego Chargers and third overall pick Joey Bosa have discussed a possible contract agreement this week, according to a report.

The two sides hadn't spoken for more than two weeks.

The Chargers have long insisted that Bosa needs to accept both a deferral of the payment of some of his signing bonus and offset language that would save the Chargers some money if they cut Bosa and he signs with someone else.

Joey Bosa Feels There's Been 'Irreparable Damage' With Chargers

Aug 13, 2016 11:41 AM

Joey Bosa and the San Diego Chargers remain at a contract impasse.

Bosa was the third overall pick out of Ohio State by the Chargers. The Chargers didn't offer Bosa a contract that immediately pays out the signing bonus or one without offset language.

"Bosa feels that there is irreparable damage that has been done over the relationship between the team and him," said Jason Cole. "All in all Bosa is feeling very angry about the situation, and we will see how it resolves itself in the coming weeks."

Stevie Johnson Out For Season After Tearing Meniscus

Aug 11, 2016 7:47 AM

Stevie Johnson has learned that surgery to repair a meniscus tear will prevent him from suiting up this year, according to a source.

Johnson suffered the injury during an early-camp practice. He was expected to operate as the primary slot receiver after tallying 45 catches for 497 yards and three touchdowns in his first season with the San Diego Chargers.

The Chargers signed James Jones following Johnson's injury, giving them options at wide receiver.

Joey Bosa's Mom Regrets Not 'Pulling An Eli Manning'

Aug 9, 2016 7:59 AM

Frustrated with the contract stalemate between the San Diego Chargers and her son, Cheryl Bosa vented on Facebook.

"It bums me out for him so much," she wrote on Facebook. "Wish we pulled an Eli Manning on draft day."

Twelve years ago, Archie Manning made it known that Eli didn't want to play for the Chargers, who owned the first overall pick. San Diego drafted Manning and then traded him to the New York Giants for Philip Rivers and draft picks.

With no progress on his rookie contract, there seems to at least be a small possibility that Bosa could sit out the entire season and re-enter the draft.
