Roger Goodell: 'Ideal Scenario' Keeps Chargers, Raiders In Place

Nov 18, 2016 7:06 AM

Having both the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers remain in their current cities is the "ideal scenario" for the NFL, according to Roger Goodell.

There has been movement for the Chargers to join the Rams in Los Angeles and the Raiders to relocate to Las Vegas.

"If we get our issues resolved in San Diego, and our issues resolved in Oakland, I think that's the ideal solution, frankly," Goodell said. "I think that's what we would all like to see happen. But there's a lot that has to get done in those two communities to get there."

The Chargers' hopes of remaining in San Diego suffered a major setback last week, when the organization received only 43 percent approval for a proposed $1.8 billion stadium and convention center.

The Raiders would have the opportunity to join the Rams if the Chargers ultimately find a way to stay in San Diego, their home since 1961. Las Vegas approved $750 million in public funds to help build a new stadium for the Raiders, who must now get approval from three-quarters of the NFL owners in order to relocate.

League Office Wants To Prevent Relocation Of Raiders, Chargers

Nov 14, 2016 2:34 PM

The NFL league office wants to avoid having the Oakland Raiders relocate to Las Vegas and the San Diego Chargers moving to Los Angeles.

The league is concerned with the Chargers becoming the Clippers to the Rams' Lakers if they move to Los Angeles. San Diego voters rejected a plan to build a downtown stadium, which could leave the Spanos family with Mission Valley as their best option.

There are also concerns with the Raiders leaving the economic wealth of the Bay Area along with their longtime passionate fan base for Las Vegas.

Mark Davis would likely need a partner to build a new stadium in the Bay Area.

NFL Pessimistic About Potential Stadium Deal Between Chargers, Rams

Nov 14, 2016 10:49 AM

Concern currently exists at the league level regarding the ability of the Chargers and Rams to strike a deal and to work together on building and sharing a stadium and a market.

The Chargers lost a ballot resolution last week to build a new stadium in San Diego.

Barring an extension, the window of opportunity for the Chargers to agree upon a stadium deal with the Rams to share Los Angeles closes on January 15, 2017.

NFL Now Has 10 Teams In Marijuana-Legal States

Nov 9, 2016 1:36 PM

With Tuesday's elections, 10 NFL teams play in a state where marijuana has been legalized medically or recreationally.

California and Massachusetts joined Washington and Colorado as states where marijuana can be consumed for any purpose. If the Raiders relocate to Las Vegas, that won't change as Nevada has legalized marijuana for recreational purposes.

Florida is one of various states to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes.

The NFL previously justified their ongoing ban because federal law considers marijuana as a controlled substance.

The 49ers, Raiders, Rams, Chargers and Patriots joined the Seahawks, Broncos, Jaguars, Dolphins and Buccaneers.

Chargers' Stadium Vote Fails, Opening Door For L.A.

Nov 10, 2016 1:00 PM

The San Diego Chargers received only 42.5 percent approval on Measure C, the team's $1.8 billion downtown stadium and convention center annex that proposed raising hotel taxes from 12.5 percent to 16.5 percent to secure $1.15 billion in bonds to help pay for the project on Tuesday.

The citizens' ballot initiative required two-thirds of the voting public within city limits to approve the project.

In a letter sent late Tuesday night, club chairman Dean Spanos thanked season-ticket holders and fans for their support but offered no insight into his intentions moving forward.

"In terms of what comes next for the Chargers, it's just too early to give you an answer," Spanos wrote. "We are going to diligently explore and weigh our options, and do what is needed to maintain our options, but no decision will be announced until after the football season concludes and no decision will be made in haste."
