Ex-Teammate: Rivers Far More Approachable Than Peyton

May 28, 2015 12:07 PM

Peyton Manning has been affable pitchman in commercials, but his qualities as a teammate have been uneven.

Manning once called Mike Vanderjagt an "idiot kicker" and there's been countless shots over the years visibly disgusted with the performance of teammates.

Orlando Franklin signed with the San Diego Chargers this offseason and he's enjoyed working with Philip Rivers.

"One thing I noticed immediately when I got here is that Philip Rivers is definitely more approachable than Peyton," Franklin said on Pro Football Talk on NBC Sports Network. "I don't know if it was because I was a lot younger being that I met Peyton in my second season and now meeting Philip going into my fifth season but definitely I will say Philip is more approachable than Peyton."

Chargers Optimistic About New Deal With Philip Rivers

May 25, 2015 12:26 AM

The San Diego Chargers are now optimistic about their chances of signing Philip Rivers to a long-term extension.

Rivers was in trade rumors leading up to the draft due to his uncertain future with the franchise.

The sides have made "a little progress" on a new deal.

The Chargers could also apply the franchise tag on Rivers in each of the next two offseasons.

NFL Optimistic Team Will Move To L.A. By 2016

May 20, 2015 12:41 PM

The NFL has a growing confidence that a team will relocate to Los Angeles by 2016.

One source said they’re “confident there’ll be multiple options” and that’s no surprise, given Rams owner Stan Kroenke’s Hollywood Park project and the Carson project, which is being spearheaded by former 49ers executive Carmen Policy, as a potential home for the Raiders and Chargers.

The progress in St. Louis is described as “steady,” while Oakland has “moved backward since March.”

Chargers Want More Speed, Turnovers On Defense

May 13, 2015 7:02 PM

The San Diego Chargers invested in running back with their first overall pick, but went defense with their final four picks.

The Chargers are looking for more speed on that side of the ball.

“The most important thing and our No. 1 goal this offseason is playing faster,” Chargers defensive coordinator John Pagano said this week. “If we’re thinking too much, we’re not going to play fast. So, our mentality going into this spring is we don’t want thinkers. We want reactors and guys playing fast.”

Second-round selection, linebacker Denzel Perryman, third-round pick, cornerback Craig Mager, fifth-round selection, edge-rusher Kyle Emanuel, and sixth-rounder Darius Philon, a defensive tackle, all ran 40-yard times under five seconds.

Eric Weddle Won't Report To Workouts Without New Deal From Chargers

May 6, 2015 12:03 PM

Eric Weddle is in the final season of his contract with the San Diego Chargers and won't report to voluntary workouts without a new deal.

“I’m not coming in anytime soon until something on their side is said,” Weddle said during an appearance with Dan Sileo of The Mighty 1090. “They know where we’re at and they obviously know their stance, so we’ll see what happens from there.”

Weddle said that he’s been in contact with defensive coordinator John Pagano about changes to the team’s defensive playbook and the team doesn’t have any mandatory work until minicamp starts on June 16.

Philip Rivers Denies Asking For Trade From Chargers

May 1, 2015 10:19 PM

Philip Rivers denied ever asking the San Diego Chargers or a trade.

There were rumors for weeks that the Chargers could trade Rivers to the Tennessee Titans.

"I think deep down in my gut I didn't think I would be gone," Rivers told San Diego-area radio station The Mighty 1090 AM. "But you just never know. I don't think you ever know. There was certainly enough smoke out there to linger a little bit to make you see if there was a fire. But I never felt like, 'Oh my gosh, this is happening.'"

Rivers had been virtually assured by the front office he wouldn't be dealt.

"I took them for their word, which was what it was -- nothing was going on," Rivers said. "But at the same time, are you really going to tell a player a month out, 'Hey, we're trying to trade you.' You know what I mean? So what I'm saying is you never really know, although I'm certainly a guy who wants to believe the truth in every way, and that's what it was."
