The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders have released overhauled renderings of their proposed $1.7 billion stadium in Carson near Los Angeles.
The Chargers and Raiders presented their concept in New York this week to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the Committee on Los Angeles Opportunities, composed of six team owners.
The revised plans show a futuristic open-air venue that has a peristyle reminiscent of the one at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.
"We wanted the building to be iconic and sleek, like a luxury sports car," said David Manica, president of Manica Architecture, who is designing the stadium. "Very aerodynamic, in motion, flowing lines from every angle."
A signature element of the design is a 115- to 120-foot tower that rises through and extends above the main concourse.
There would be a cauldron that would change depending on the team.
For Raiders games, a flame would burn in the cauldron in honor of legendary team owner Al Davis.
When the Chargers play, simulated lightning bolts would swirl behind glass encasing the tower and, if the team were to score a touchdown, a bolt would shoot out of the top.
The tower would be transformed into a giant Lombardi Trophy if the venue were to host a Super Bowl.
The San Diego Chargers and Tennessee Titans have held no trade discussions involving Philip Rivers, according to a source within the Chargers' organization.
There have been consistent reports linking the two teams on a trade of Rivers for several weeks.
Rivers is unsure about his future with the Chargers amid the possibility of relocation to Los Angeles.
Rivers could reunite closer to home with Ken Whisenhunt and the Titans.
San Diego also has interest in drafting Marcus Mariota.
Tom Telesco is confident that Eric Weddle will eventually be signed by the San Diego Chargers to a long-term extension.
Weddle is entering his ninth NFL season, all spent with San Diego. He hasn't missed a game the past five years while being named an All-Pro after each of them.
"He's a major part of our football team, an excellent player," Telesco said. "I'm sure our future would have him involved. There's no doubt. We're a better football team with him."
The Minnesota Vikings want a resolution to the Adrian Peterson situation during draft week.
"If he's not traded next week, they're going to keep him," the source said.
The Vikings could entice a team to trade for Peterson once Melvin Gordon and Todd Gurley are drafted.
According to a source, the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars, San Diego Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the six teams that could deal for Peterson.
Peterson was reinstated last week from an NFL suspension for a child-abuse incident.
LaDainian Tomlinson believes Philip Rivers has "lost confidence" in the San Diego Chargers' organization.
"I don't know if Philip wants to be there anymore. I think he's lost confidence in the organization," Tomlinson said. "He's seeing a lot of changes going on and the LA thing is valid; him not wanting to go to LA, that is very valid, I can see that."
Tomlinson himself had a difficult departure from the Chargers.
"The parts around him keep on moving. The receiving corps keeps on changing; Eddie Royal is now gone. We talked about this before with Vincent Jackson leaving years ago. There are so many parts that are leaving where Philip is looking around that locker room and he doesn't see anyone he's familiar with other than Antonio Gates," Tomlinson said. "Now to that point, Antonio Gates next year is a free agent. Eric Weddle is going to be up. Next year the Chargers have a lot of decisions to make with a lot of key guys, so Philip could be looking at the situation and thinking we're not close to winning a championship anytime soon."
There has been speculation that the San Diego Chargers could trade Philip Rivers to the Tennessee Titans in a deal that moves them up to the second overall pick to draft Marcus Mariota.
Rivers is in the final year of his contract, has indicated an unwillingness to engage in contract extension talks and will play out the deal.
The Chargers are in win-now mode and Rivers remains under Chargers' control for three more seasons regardless of whether he signs an extension.
