Lurie: Eagles Released DeSeason Jackson As 'Football Decision'

Sep 25, 2014 7:15 AM

Chip Kelly has received the support of Philadelphia Eagles' owner Jeffrey Lurie in the decision to release DeSean Jackson.

The Eagles have denied the decision as being anything more than a "football decision."

"It was really a football decision," Lurie told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Chip and his people were incredibly clear that for us to get better we need to take a step back and reconfigure the wide receiver position. I think common to a lot of really smart coaches, he knows exactly what he wants at every position. And for Chip on offense, it just wasn't a good fit. It just was not a good fit with what he asks wide receivers to do."

Foles: DeSean Jackson Was Great Teammate

Sep 4, 2014 5:28 PM

Nick Foles was asked multiple questions about DeSean Jackson during an appearance as honorary captain of the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League.

“You know, it's surprising,” Foles told Comcast SportsNet's Derrick Gunn on Jackson’s release. “But at the same time, you learn that it's a business. It's a tough business at times. We develop a lot of friendships on a team and I've had many of my close teammates let go. It's very tough, but at the same time you know it's part of the game, part of the business.”

Foles was asked again about his relationship with Jackson.

“He was a great teammate to me,” Foles said. “We had a great relationship on and off the field. Everybody has other things going on, but to me, personally, I really enjoyed playing with him and I'm excited that he landed on his feet. He's a heck of a player. … You wish them well. He landed on his feet and I know he's going to do well. He's a great player, he's been tremendous for me. But at the same time, we have to keep moving forward as an organization. But I do wish DeSean well. I had a blast playing with him.”

McCoy Doesn't Think Players Happy DeSean Jackson Was Released

Oct 25, 2014 3:15 PM

LeSean McCoy never witnessed DeSean Jackson curse at Chip Kelly and he also doesn't believe players on the Philadelphia Eagles are happy he has been released.

"It's a surprise for sure. Anybody that tells you they're happy about it, I don't know how honest that would be. It is a surprise. You've heard so much, you don't really know (what's true). Not playing with him is definitely going to be different. Playing against him is REALLY going to be different ... It's some big shoes to fill. DeSean's by far one of the biggest playmakers in the game, and the biggest deep threat there is in the game. Some big shoes to fill, for sure.

"Then again, the front office, they obviously know what they're doing. You make a move like that, you obviously have something up your sleeve, where you know you can get something that's similar or even better."

Eagles Pursued Trade For Dion Jordan

Jun 24, 2014 7:50 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles recently pursued a trade for Dion Jordan of the Miami Dolphins.

Jordan played sparingly for the Dolphins last season, who was taken third overall out of Oregon in 2013.

Jordan had just 26 tackles and two sacks.

Report: Eagles' Teammates Didn't Like Jackson

Oct 25, 2014 3:19 PM

DeSean Jackson was not very well liked by his teammates with the Philadelphia Eagles and was blatantly insubordinate, according to sources.

Jackson cussed out Chip Kelly several times in front of the team.

Several other sources also suggested that Jeremy Maclin may have had an issue if Jackson returned to the Eagles in 2014.

“The fact is, [Jackson] was a ‘me-guy’ with an attitude problem and [Maclin] is the complete opposite, a team guy, a great character guy you go to war with,” said one source. “Funny how [Jackson] has this anti-bully thing and he thought he could push [Kelly] around; he found out otherwise. His being cut had nothing to do with the gang stuff. The team knew it. Everyone knew he had ‘ties.’ Those were his guys. That’s okay. What put him out was his selfishness. He can try and spin it all he wants how he’s ‘a team player.’ He’s not. I’ll put it this way, when it came out last Friday that [Jackson] was released, more than a few guys were happy it happened. They said ‘good riddance.’ He had no real connection with anyone."

DeSean Jackson Clears Air On Gang Report

Dec 7, 2014 10:01 AM

DeSean Jackson spoke about a report from last week alleging his involvement in gang activity.

"I actually got a chance to hear about [the NJ.com report] before it came out," Jackson said. "Got a call before it came out. My agent called. How do I feel about NJ.com? From my point of view, it was very disrespectful. I don't think it was right -- straight up."

According to the NJ.com story, Jackson was associated with Theron Shakir, one of two men charged with the murder of a 14-year-old.

Jackson said he had no connection to the incident because he was playing football in 2009, when the killing occurred.

Asked if he hangs out with gang members, Jackson said, "Not if they're doing negative things." He added that gangs were products of the environment in which he grew up and that he witnessed "things" on a daily basis.

"Do I know people who are involved? Yes," he said. "I'm definitely aware of and know certain gang members.

"But as far as being affiliated, never have been in one. I've always felt I've been a product of my environment, but I've always felt I've wanted to do things the right way."

Brandin Cooks Believes He Can Match, Exceed DeSean Jackson

Oct 30, 2014 12:03 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles could look at Brandin Cooks out of Oregon State to replace DeSean Jackson.

“His game is unbelievable,” Cooks said, via Jimmy Kempski of Philly.com. “The man can blow the top off, catch the deep routes, catch the underneath routes, produce in the return game. He’s just special. He’s a freak. I definitely admire his game. Maybe Chip Kelly is looking to take another speedy receiver in that first round, and that could be me. Who knows? And if that’s the case, a lot of people will wonder ‘Can he do it like DeSean Jackson?’ In my opinion, I can do it like him and do it better.”

Jackson's Five-Year, $50M Deal With Eagles Became Two-Years, $18M

Oct 30, 2014 12:04 PM

DeSean Jackson signed a five-year, $50 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012.

But with his release last week, Jackson ended up netting just two seasons and $18 million.

NFL contracts are rarely as valuable as they are when they're announced due to the lack of guarantees.
