Schaub To Have More Control Of Offense With Raiders

Jun 22, 2014 4:36 PM

Matt Schaub is excited to have more responsibilities in the Oakland Raiders' offense than he did with the Houston Texans.

"It's exciting. It's just like going to a new place and getting a fresh start," the quarterback told Jerry McDonald of the Bay Area News Group. "To come to an offense where the coach is looking to give you more freedom, and looking to give you more control of things.

"I had that in some aspects in Houston, but there are things I'm being asked to do here that I didn't have control of in Houston. I would have loved to, but we just weren't in control of it."

Schaub never had the ability to make his own checks and calls on the line.

"To now be in that position, and being the quarterback, that's such a great place to be because you can get everyone on the same page," Schaub said. "You can get into a great play, a better play that you had called. ... It's a work in progress, but I'm ecstatic to have that situation because it's something I've wanted to try and get to."

Derek Carr Would Only Start If Something 'Catastrophic' Happened

Aug 5, 2014 4:54 AM

The Oakland Raiders used a second round pick on Derek Carr, but he's not expected to start in his first season.

Matt Schaub was acquired by the Raiders via trade before the draft.

Dennis Allen is "firmly committed" to Schaub as his quarterback.

Jim Trotter reported that it would take something catastrophic for Carr to become the Raiders' starter.

Allen Sees A Lot Of Von Miller In Khalil Mack

Sep 4, 2014 7:25 PM

Dennis Allen was defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos in the rookie season of Von Miller and he sees similarities to him in first round pick Khalil Mack.

"Absolutely, I saw a lot of similarities between him and Von Miller," Allen said.

"And the thing that really was attractive about Khalil Mack was the fact that he understands how to rush the passer. And he understands how to rush the passer with power."

Mack was a late bloomer, receiving recruitment from just two colleges out of high school. But Mack was the MAC defensive player of the year with 10.5 sacks and 19 tackles for a loss.

McKenzie Will Still Draft For Future Despite Lack Of Job Security

Oct 30, 2014 12:16 PM

In this third draft as general manager of the Oakland Raiders, Reggie McKenzie's job security is in question as he has yet to improve the roster.

"You draft for the future," McKenzie said Thursday at a news conference with local media. "You don't draft for right now. That's not the way you do it. That's not the way I do it."

The Raiders are scheduled to pick No. 5 overall and also own picks in rounds two, three and four. The Raiders' fifth and sixth round picks were dealt to acquire Matt Flynn and Matt Schaub.
